WSOP trip report

Just thought Id provide you people with a little insight about my trip experience down at the WSOP if youre going down.

Day 1 I played in the B flight for the housewarming - I must have gotten lucky cause when I went to the cashier line there were 4 people in front of me. Sat down 7 handed and basically was at that table until level 10 - didnt have many premium hands actually ran it down to about 3k ish and got it all in 6 ways with 77 flopped a set and held. After the colour up break got 1 KO and 1 Double situations were AK v AQ and then the double up went UTG +1 raises 2.5x 2 calls in front im on the button with 10 10, BB jams 240k folds back to me I tanked a bit and made the call - he showed AQ and held, Ran it up to 134,000 at dinner break. After that it was a table carousel as I moved from Gold Ballys to Orange Ballys to Red Ballys to Blue Ballys - Only Notable confrontation was I raised A5 in the Cut Off, called by tbe blinds to a A Q 5 flop. BB leads I tried to set a trap and flat - turned a Q - hand checked down after that and he showed down A-2 (the Q really killed that hand cause the river was a 2 and would have surely got a full double up). Played pretty boring the rest of the night got in the money around Level 17 but couldnt make anything happen, ended up shoving K4 for 8BBs on the button, snapped off by 77hd in the big blind to a flop of Kd 10c 8c, only to get the 7s on the turn and no help on the river. Which got me the 482 for the flight and $876 payout.

Played again In flight C. To be quite honest I was card dead entire day and if I hadn't made a few big plays before dinner break I would out far sooner. Best hand of the session was AA twice, BB walk Once and button raise and 2 folds the second. Ended up blinding out which sucked but 49 410 47 48 seemed like were stuck to me on my last table. Ended up shoving 109ss and losing to K 7 with no improvment. Boring day.

The one thing I will say about the fields from both flights is that they were pretty soft, I think 20,000 ish was the final tally of entrants. Alot of late reg or re entries always came to the table complaining about lines. Lines at the cashier then lines to the late reg\re entry table were stupid long.

I wanted to fire in 1D but i was mentally exhausted, needed to take a day off.

Monday I entered the $600 Deepstack - first experience in the Paris Ballroom on Table 3 to start - day started 10 handed which was surprising but table draw was pretty good. Witnessed this hand... Blind vs Blind. SB (85dd) v BB (KKxx) no raise PF.
FLOP 764. CHECK CHECK. TURN K. Bet 1500, Called by BB. RIVER 6, Bet 6000, called by BB. You want to have an idea of the caliber of players in these fields that sums it up perfectly.

Anywho, as for me I had no confrontations up until after 2nd break when levels started getting meaty. Ran my 30k into 120k pretty casually. Dont even know if I really had a showdown to be honest. Then this hand happened. New table, maybe 10-15 hand there and the last hand before dinner break. Picked up KK in UTG+1. Blinds 2500 5000 5000 UTG opens 11.5K, sized his stack (roughly 93K) so i 3bet to 31K. All folds UTG flats instantly. FLOP 5 5 10 - RAINBOW. Check, I lead 20k. He jams his last 60k i snap. He flips over Ad 5c.... what can i expect in a $600 field though I guess - No help for me and Left me with 28k after a 75 minute dinner break. That was a killer, would have had a 35BB stack after lunch with a 3 table short stacks to my left. After lunch i ended up jamming 22 in the BB and snapped by KK. That was the end of that one.

On top of that, next day I got Covid so i spent the next 48 hrs in my room with meds and isolating until I feeling better (which by the way if you have been following the 2022 WSOP on twitter its going around there like crazy). Wear your mask, be heavy on the sanitizer, and bring wipes. The mass of poker players there are absolutely disgusting!! I met alot of awesome people and had a great time but I cant elaborate how out of touch and disgusting ALOT of these players were. Anyone planning to go, don't be discouraged be cautious (I was naive and unmasked the first day and I guarantee that was my downfall).

Poker wise though, hard not to be result oriented but I felt I played really well in cash and tournament but was down approx $3,000 spread out playing $2/$5 $1500 Max at Aria and the 2 housewarming bullets and the $600 deepstack event. Lucky for me I got lucky on a slot machine so I may still be back early July...

Biggest things Id like to share with any of you booked to go down:
#1 - pre reg on the bravo app you will save so much time avoiding these lines at the Paris. They charge a 17.75 i think fee but its worth it. PRO TIP - If you are down there and want to buy in direct with cash skip the champagne room lines and just head into the Paris ballroom, beside the kings lounge and Yellow tables the 3 cages there allow you to buy into events with cash or chips only and the lines were empty when I went.

#2 - Mask it and sanitize like crazy!!! Maybe leave early for breaks to avoid the crowds rushing for food and bathrooms. Be careful and good luck!

  • Thanks for the trip report. I'm staying at Bally's & will be playing the WSOP $1K & 11 other Seniors Events. If I have a Diamond Card, do I still go to the Paris ballroom's 3 cages or did you notice separate lines for the 7 Stars & Diamond members?

When you said that a lot of the maskless players were out of touch & absolutely disgusting, were you talking about their hygiene or conspiracy theories? I'm used to most Americans being totally clueless about the scientific recommendation to wear N95-type masks with the airborne coronavirus, unlike many Canadians & most of Asia. Health officials are urging masks in Las Vegas due to high levels of COVID among many pros & other people, but most players will ignore it unless the WSOP mandates it.

  • 7 Star and Diamond Plus still have the bypass lanes but still had lines. From my experience, 2 times I went to those cages in Paris BR I walked up and bought in right away, no line either time.

My little rant was based on their hygiene, no masks is fine but coughing onto other patrons is the specific example I saw and likely got me sick. There were these 2 bigger gentlemen who were coughing their lungs out in the hallway during break not covering their mouth (they were maskles).

Lol id hope not, however the crowd of fan boys for these poker players are serious.

I played with the kid who finished 4th in the heads up in flight 1B of the housewarming and I caught up with him on break during his match with Vogelsang and he had all these guys asking for his autograph and he just laughed it off. Very nice kid, I brought up how stoic Vogelsang was being in his match and he said it was like it was playing a robot.

That said, im not big on being star struck for poker players but these guys playing in the high roller events are so boring. I dont even know why they play these live, majority of them are emotionless robots. Kinda sad to be honest.

  • One or more dealer/player in every table I played had the COVID Cough but couldn't care less about wearing a mask, so they just kept spreading it to each other! I know many players who got infected but probably many more who refused to test that they were positive & just kept playing & spreading it.

Unlike California where a lot more people were wearing masks like in Canada & I could not even enter a building without showing my quadruple vaccination history, Las Vegas was bad for anybody who does not want to get infected by COVID. I was one of the very rare people who always wore KN95 masks in Vegas, & as soon as I got home, I self-tested to confirm that I was not infected & would not spread it to my family.

  • Tournament 1 in the books, $777 WSOP.
It played 7 handed so the first level we sat with 3 players until the 4th showed up near the end of level 1 which sucked, table draw was pretty weak but I wasnt fortunate to get any of their chips early on.
Stack was 35K at first break. 36K at 2nd break. Was up and down but no real notable hands.
Got a big double up with AJdd v AKoff. Hit the straight and got me to 63K, then knocked a short stack out with K8 v A4. 74K stack at that point.
Shortly thereafter I shoved 10s into 77s. Held up and got the KO to ~100K.
Soon enough I found myself in a situation with a 3-bet pot and im in the BB with 10s again. I jam, guy tanked and called with AQoff.
    Flop of AQ9. Turn 7. River 10!
Got me to 235K for dinner break.
After break though I got beaten up by the short stacks.
AJss < 44, then 99 < JJ, then AJ < Q9 all in the same orbit. By the end of the beating i sat with 33K.
Kept jamming as short stack and getting no callers until I was back to 90K.
Then an interesting hand happened. It ended up being 85k effective (was hovering around 135k) with 88. UTG raising at this point every hand (12k this hand, so in UTG+1 i 3 bet to 33000.
Button looks down and insta jams. For 85K. I take but it was too good of a price so I called. 88 < QQ.
Then i lost 2 orbits of blinds, nothing to protect.
Basically at level 3000 6000 6000 with my 14k stack. UTG min raises. Button Flats. I look down at 8 3cc. I call then bet out my last 2000 on Kc Qs 3s. Got called by QJ. Turn was an 8 and i held. Got be up to 50kish.

Then had a series of shove folds to battle up to 88k.
    Picked off a 4.5BB jam J8off v A3off. Hit the 8 on the river.
Then I got moved to a pretty stacked table, had Brain Altman to my direct right and to his right was Spraggy.
First I look at AQoff. Jam and take it. Then in the SB i look down at K6dd. Altman had a stack and was being super aggressive so i saw this as a shot and jammed 110k, he tanked then called with A4off. Ended up binking the straight on the turn with the 6.
Got it back to around 240k ish and we broke the money. Which then broke our table shortly thereafter, finally got to table 405 sitting to the right of Jeff Boski if anyone knows, nice guy.
First hand AKoff. I jam and take it.
Interesting hand. Big stack(+800k stack) suddenly got uber aggressive and bejng picked off my 3 or 4 bets.
So i look in tge BB and see K4cc 😍. Jam on his button raise and he snaps it with AA.
Until the flop brings Ks 10c 6c.
    Turn. 5h.
    River Kh!
Game played reletively straight foraard afther that and I got to Greedy and 3bet jammed JKoff.

Snapped by AQ, and that was that.

    Finished 169 out of 1800ish.
    $1554 PAYOUT.

    Now onto the next one.

  • Crazy all the races you have to get in (win or lose) to even make the money... Push/fold and position are just so key...

Today was the Stud 8/Omaha 8 at MGM Grand Series.

Right from the get go I started stacking in the O8 levels, Stud 8 had rolled up 10s and couldnt hit the boat and got scooped but had a good stack before.

34,100 at first break, 25,000 was starting stack.

Notable hand was Stud 8, Aces up with 64 low scooped a big one.

    60,000 at second break.

Next 2 hrs were really boring, crazy hand i wasnt involved, Rolled up 2s v Rolled up Ks. Ended up at showdown. Quads 2s v Kings Full of Aces.

    70,000 at third break.

Had a monster stud 8 level after break. Made the wheel on 5th street and scooped a good one. Then a few hands later hit the nut flush nut low with Ac3cKs4s on a runout of Js 8s 4c 2c Kc. 4 callers to the river.

    310,000 @ 3rd break

Got involved with a big hand again Linda Johnson in Stud 8 close to the money Bubble,
    My board A 2 3 8
    LJ board 2 5 A Q
    I Rolled up A 2 8 In the hole,
    Lj showed 444 under.
Money bubbled cracked shortly there after.

    61k @ 4th break.

Ended up jamming my last 23K on a bring in 3000 BI 8000-16000 stud 8

2s7s, 2d. Then runout 3x 5s 9s 4h which was NG cause the one guy had the 7 card straight 8765432 too scoop it all.

    Placed 15th for $1,270
I was the only average joe left at that point as everyone left knew each other as they were all regulars.

    GG, onto the next one.
Looking like it will be either WSOP $600 PLO-NLHE mix Wednesday or regroup for the WSOP $800 8-handed deepstack thursday.

Definitely feeling drained after 21 hours of poker in the last 2 days. So ill re evaluate in the morning.

  • Doing great, keep er going!
  • Jesus Christ she had 5 outs to scoop you? What the hell was she doing? Especially when your board shows 8 perfect. Why is she even playing 442 against A up. WTF?

I Played the $600 yesterday PLO/NL event but lasted into second level only, i made a stupid mistake which I know better.

My Hand, 2c2h in the BB. UTG+1 raises to 800, 2 callers I closed out with the call.

Flop 10h 5h 2s, I check UTG1 leads 1500, fold, call, this is where im upset about - I not verbally threw in a 5K chip to check raise.

Turn comes Jc, i lead 6,000. Utg call.

    River 3h. I lead 8k. He jams for 7k more, i call.
    He flips Kh9h.

*** I understand I compounded the mistakes here with the 8k lead on the river, but in these spots with Re Entry Tournaments you gotta get value especially early.

I intended to rebuy but I was too heated and decided against it.

Back at it today in the $800 NL 8-handed Deepstack and feeling good so hopefully I run good.
  • Onto Day 2 of the $800 8-Handed Deepstack.
    Bagged 365,000(12BB), 170ish players left from 2,800.

    Lets Go!

    Restart is at Noon.

  • Busted in 112th. Shoved KQcc (10BBs) and called by AcJs by the bigstack
  • so close, you are getting there
  • Congrats Matt on the run. So close! Any more events planned?
  • Congrats Matt on the run. So close! Any more events planned?

All done for this trip, Me and Joe Late reg'ed for the Aria $400 today. I busted QQ to AA, on a runout of Q 10 4 A A.. pretty sick but ah well.
  • So I let a few of the guys know about this sick hand from day 1 that saved my tournament life.

Hand details, 7 handed stack is about 190000 in 5000/10000/10000
I have As Ad HJ raised to 20,000 get 2 callers (button and BB)

FLOP As 2c 6h. I bet 20000. Button calls, BB folds.

TURN 5s, I check - he says "Ill let you catch up" and checks.

RIVER 9d. I Bet 45,000, he insta shoves, i tanked for probably 6-8 minutes and asked if he can beat an Ace. He smiled but didnt say anything and my gut was saying Im beat... I folded and he shows 3h4h.

Pretty sick spot but I still had 10BBs and i ran it up into day 2.

Good to be home in Canada though after Saturday night.

So after I busted the $600 NL/PLO I sat down on a 2-5 game with $1,000. Good game, lots of fun guys, had an online crusher from denmark who basically admitted that when he plays he has a separate laptop set up with solvers for tournament and cash but anyways onto the session...

Ran pretty good, never got into any big confrontations but still cashed out $1,700ish out of that game and combined with a little slot win of $400 at ballys after it was a winning day.

After busting from day 2 of the deepstack I was in a pretty good mood so I went to Aria, they had an open seat on 2-5 so I sat down with the max $1,500. Played kinda loose at first had the table doing so shots and drinking so overall it was a fun night and took off $2,700 from that game. Big hand was a full double... i had KsKc in the straddle - new player super aggressive to my left open raised to $75 no callers so i close with a flat call.

    Flop " Jc 10s 4c " check, he leads out $120. I call.

Turn 8s. I lead $220, he insta raises to $650. The way i played this hand, no way he puts me on KK so I shove for $1,100 total and he goes in the tank. Finally calls with Ac8c and the river comes off clean. So I get a full double, played a couple orbits after and donated some back before calling it a night.

Now onto Saturday, which most of you probably saw Daniels social media it was a scary yet typical American over reaction in these times down there.

Sat down at the Aria in the tournament pit outside the poker room. $2-5 game $1,500 was my buyin, played for about 45mins to an hour before crowds of people started running towards the exit and yelling "shooter! shooter!" So naturally I abandon my stuff and fled. (i tried to hurdle a barrier caught my foot and fell hard onto the floor, currently nursing a wicked bruise on my left thigh and quad area, sore hip and sore lower back - it wasnt the best decision). Shortly after making it to the tram area for Park MGM i realized why am I running, I heard no shots, security was relatively calm but walking into the casino - so I casually strolled back to my room and called my buddy who was playing in the pit at the aria and was hiding under the table as per dealer instruction and he also didnt hear any shots at that side of the casino and also mentioned that 3 armed guards walked passed him with their guns drawns sweeping the casino floor.

Besides my bruises and soreness i did cash out $1,800 from that game. But it was an interesting night.

That wraps up my 2022 WSOP Trip(s).
    MTT Buy-in total = $3,677
    Prize Money = $6,010
    Profitted $2,333.

Dragon Link Slots though I was probably up over $10k on them, maybe next year it will be a slots trip with some side WSOP action. I was lucky and fortunate this year to leave ahead, onto next year.

GL and see you all around on the tables.
