Chatter, decorum, and _poker etiquette_ ?

"Talking is absolutely one of the biggest giveaways in poker. Only the most experienced of players can babble away without giving away something up, and then only if talking is his or her strategy. There are players who can talk others out of their game --- get so off stride, distracted and frustrated that they practically go tilt. (Paul Newman in The Sting is a classic example). There are others who deliberately bait other players, criticize their play or even bring up religion and politics to annoy others to the point that they can't concentrate. Try remembering tells while some yahoo starts ranting about various conspiracies or whatever controversy."

I'm an introvert so I don't talk that much. Is it too much to expect others to stop chattering when I'm in the middle of a big hand?

    My opinion only here

Put yourself in a casino.. there are 20 tables in the room and everyone is talking and not one of them are sitting at your table. Now a player babbling at you about this or that (no pun intended) that is your opponent, if it will throw you off your game, you have to learn to find a way to tune them out. There is NOTHING they are saying to you that is important. The only thing that is important is are they betting, raising, checking, calling, folding. You are also watching them for tells. that's your job nothing else, after that then you can zone back in. Heck wear headphones if you need to but you will be anti social if you do or take them off after the hand! You will see some players put up the hood put on the glasses and headphones as soon as they have a hand they make an intention on. You have no obligation to talk to anyone at that table. Keep in mind if you are wearing headphones you better pay attention to the action and know when it is your turn to act or people are going to just yell at you. If you have ever watched me in a hand live if I don't know it's my turn you can tell me "hey Steve, it's your turn to act" and I'm like "what?" it because I am quite literally blocking the room out, I am so focused on the table at that moment. I like to wear one headphone so that I can hear the room but also so I can "tune in" my music and it gives me something to listen to instead if that makes sense. It's a good skill and you should learn it! and everyone will not be the same. think Tom Dwan, that guy can zone out a room!

Also define a "BIG HAND" to you, $50 could be huge to others $500 is... If the table is really loud you can ask for a moment to think if it truly is a big hand. If you are playing for $5 I would imaging you'll get told to GTFO. I play a .10/.20 cash game $50 buy-in and by the end of the night stacks can get to $200-$350 and if I see a huge hand forming Ill stop talking but I am also not a dick!

only my 2 cents and I'm a nobody so take all that with a grain of salt!

  • There are very few rules about talking at a poker table.

Mostly, as long as you're not discussing the hand / players or trying to influence the hand you're fine. If it is a big pot it is not uncommon to have (I've done it myself) a player ask for a moment to think. I have never seen such a request made and not be given some respect.
Can I ask where that quote comes from?

Friendly home game for not high stakes? I don't care if people are talking. That's half the fun. If I'm playing high stakes, I may ask for someone to give me a minute if it's a big hand.

  • I still griped about that time playing PLO at woog's and torontocpt was to the left of me and muttered something when I was in the middle of a big hand. I was considering what to do then he completely ruined my concentration. I bet he doesn't remember either...

In my opinion mentioning another player being out of decorum in a thread talking about poker etiquette isn't a non-sequitur. I'm wondering if other players have had the same issue?

edit: it was torontocaptain, he opened his yap in the middle of big PLO hand at woogs, which I ended up folding
when other players are contemplating a call in a $200 hand quiet on the set we're filming?

There is a fine line between teasing and bullying. I like how other players talk smack then get offended by just retorts.

I missed this the first time.
I vaguely remember you and the hand. I think you folded quads. Silly man.
Still thinking about that hand from 3+ years ago??? Let it go. As someone posted on this thread, it is nice to be social when playing live. Haha. Did you know you can ask someone politely to be quiet when you are in the middle of a big decision.

  • Silly man...

I don't hold grudges. Merely sharing my experiences with other players from this 'poker community'. Lesson learned...

  • This is what I think of whenever I overheard a lush lout middle-aged white guy cracking a 'yo mama' "joke".
That and I honest haven't heard 'yo mama' jokes since middle-school.

  • About five years ago playing in a bar setting. Another player had deliberately mucked their cards onto my pocket JJ.
Which I can't quite remember but maybe I flopped a set and rivered a boat. My bad for not protecting my cards.
But I honestly didn't consider another player may do that.

Not much recourse being the new guy in a bar in a neighbouring towne.

What would a gentleman do settle it Queensberry rules? I'm not looking to hug-it-out with anyone.
Especially strangers in a dank bar who may or may not fancy hugging other dudes.

    Bold move.

Must have read my kindness for being meek. Whereas in my opinion is that kindness and empathy is humanities strength.

I didn't even realize until showdown when I showed my cards. I showed my neighbouring players cards.
He had muck his cards over top of mine. I showed my JJ and explained. Villain said that my cards were dead
as touched by mucked cards. With a smug smirk. I didn't protest. Rules are rules. Not about to get into a pissing match with a room full of strangers. Sharks had a good read on me. However, likely lost more because I decided it best to
    not attend that game again.

At the time I didn't make a stink. Being a novice. Now I understand why poker has a bad rep.

Full of unscrupulous characters bending if not breaking etiquette and rules for an unfair advantage.

Some of them are even well-to-do in the sense of having a career, nice car(s), more than adequate accommodations & orderly life. Yet that's not enough. Cheap thrills at others' expense...
  • You won't find that in our group, at least not more than once. They wouldn't be back. Playing in underground raked games ymmv.

A many tables at the freeze out tournament. Lively bunch enjoying the sportage of attempting to negging their opponents.

I guess my etiquette question today is. Is it frowned upon to yell out for cards when a race is happening when you are not in a hand?
I gander it an unwritten rule to prevent potential problems but is there anything in Roberts' Rules which may be quoted?

I wouldn't think so, as long as all action possible in the hand is completed.

You probably do not play other online games :) I often notice jokes about mom in one game's chat room. Sometimes even angry. Yes, I understand that this is indicative of the age of the players.
