Guess the hands -- free hat!

Cross post from CanadianPoker.com...

Paradise Poker Lava tournament. There are 80 players left in a field of 430. 50 get paid.

Average is 20K. I have 30K. My opponent has 34K.

I have only played 9 hands with him in this tournament. In those nine hands he has raised, flat called a raise, and limped. So... he is playing a lot of hands. I have this note from a previous encounter:

"will raise and fold to re-raise
very tight with big stack"

It is folded to my opponent on the button. The blinds are 600-1200 and there is an ante of 50. He makes it 4,000 to go.
The small blind folds.
I give it some thought. The play of my cards is not, for me, automatic. I make it 16,000 to go.
My opponent calls.
The flop is As 8s Ac.
I move all-in for my remaining 14,000.
He appears to give it a lot of thought. He eventually calls. He wins the pot and eliminates me.

What is my hand?

What is his hand?

I will give it a week. If anyone guesses both hands correctly within a week I will send a free Team Canuck hat as soon as they arrive (should be about two weeks).

I do not believe that I will be giving away a hat -- unless someone on this board was at the table.

I will pop in and confirm a right answer if I see one. Deadline for correct answer is Sep 30, midnight, CST.

  • obv he slow rolled u with quad aces.. u had 88?
  • He had QQ you had JJ
  • Well I guess suites don't matter, I hope, and we probably only get one guess.

I'm gonna say he had KK and you had J8.

P.S This is totally one of those I had AQ he had KK and rivered a K or something unpredictable like that :)
  • He had A8 you had AK - please sign my hat :)
  • Sure... I like hats...

I'm going to guess that although you're hand wasn't an "automatic player" yet you were still willing to put 1/2 your stack in, you had JJ, maybe QQ, but I'll go with JJ

Being that he seems like the kinda player to only play quality hands, I'll say he had 7-8 and spiked the boat on the turn or river... :)

  • you had A9 diamonds and he had 88

    Cheers,
    Steve
  • He had :ks :qs and you had :kd :ad. He sucked out his flush.

  • Guys, think of what Dave loves to do -- resteal.  His notes say the villian is a great canadidate for the resteal move.  So, what is in Dave's re-steal range which is not automatic?  I'd have to say something like KQo - JTs.

Now, this hand would not be memorable if his opponent didn't have a hand which could call a resteal and an all-in on the flop AND win the hand.  So, I'm thinking a low pocket pair -- something like 55-22.

Since Dave wants exact hands, instead of the good old hand ranges I guess  (Dave first Villan Second)

    1) KQ vs 55
    2) KQ vs 44
    3) KQ vs 33
    4) KQ vs 22
    5) QJ vs 55
    6) QJ vs 44
    7) QJ vs 33
    8) QJ vs 22
    9) KJ vs 55
    10) KJ vs 44
    11) KJ vs 33
    12) KJ vs 22
    13) KT vs 55
    14) KT vs 44
    15) KT vs 33
    16) KT vs 22
    17) QT vs 55
    18) QT vs 44
    19) QT vs 33
    20) QT vs 22
    21) JT vs 55
    22) JT vs 44
    23) JT vs 33
    24) JT vs 22

Ok, I think I've got enough guesses in.  Man I  want the hat.  Does this  include free shipping or do I need to come to Saskatoon to  pick it up?

    Cheers

  • You 88
    him AK

Based on your notes I can see you trying to move him off his hand with a reraise but 88 is not an
automatic.  Based on your notes, folding to a reraise, I can't see him calling with less than a big pair or AK.  I think he would lay down AQ.

On the flop you expect him to call with a big A and fold any other PP anyways so you move in with your boat but he spikes a K to eliminate you.
  • Oops fogot the other hand ranges -- unpaired paint which the villian has a better kicker. Now that I think of it, this would be a more memorable, unlikely matchup.

  • My answer is close to another. I put him on KK and you on 88.
  • Nice PKR. But you shoulda said QQ :) So at least one of use woulda been right :D for the half.
  • It's Dave's range I have no clue on. It's his resteal range which is wide.

The stealer to call off half his stack (and not push preflop) Suggests to me that he has a middling pocket pair, and wants to see a safe flop.

Somewhere in the TT-77 range I think.

The fact that dave said it wasn't a quick call easily rules out any A or 88 (and I don't think he wants to call off half his stack preflop with a big ace to probably get auto-pushed on the flop.

I'm going to say stealer has 99.

I'm going to say Dave has some paint. He figure's with 2 aces on the board it's less likely his opponent has one. He also probably figures his opponent wouldn't have called preflop with a big ace. He probably has a backdoor spade draw, and vs. a small pair, figures an 8 might even counterfeit his opponent. He's shoving to represent either a bigger pair, or an A.

I'll say Dave has KJo with the Ks.
  • Dave: K7o
    Villian: 44
  • I read in Dave's earlier post, you try to avoid chip leaders unless you have a strong hand.

    DAVE vs VILLIAN

    1st guess: AK vs A8
    2nd guess: KJ vs KQ
    3rd guess: AQ vs AK
    4th guess: AJ vs AQ

ps. Can you still sign my hat?
  • WTH do we get 4 guesses too?
  • Dave - Q8

    Villian - 99

Of course my head is really big and I don't wear hats well.
  • No correct guesses yet.

I'd guess this is along the right lines, but I think Dave's range would be much bigger than that against a player known to fold to a reraise.
In previous articles he mentioned restealing with small suited connectors so that if you happen to get called, you are less likely to be dominated.

I'm going to have to guess Dave had 56s and got called by 77, or maybe even a smaller pocket pair
  • Dave had K / 10

    Opponent 9 / 8

    lol
  • Dave 7-2 vs 9-2
  • No correct guesses yet.

Does this mean we should guess again or what? Some guidelines to this contest would be appreciated :)

Has anyone guess at least one of the hands yet?
  • Guess again.

Nobody has yet guessed either hand correctly.
  • 5-3spades vs. 10-8
    or
two spade draws- and you were out-kicked..say q-10s vs k-9s
  • you had 8 9 s and your friend (villian) had TT.
  • Villain JT
    Hero 87
  • since every combination of hands have been said, im just gonna say this:

Spade draw vs bigger Spade draw
smaller pocket pair vs bigger pocket pair
same card vs same card better kicker
    middle pair vs suck out

I give up....Dave you give us no info on anything but the flop, and your "notes" about stealing.

Can you still sign my hat for trying?
  • Easy one
    You 89 probabbly clubs
    Him 10h10s
  • I posted before I read the other, so I agree with Acidjoe
