  • What does the EPT use? Looks and sounds like ceramics to me.
  • Watching EPT10 Monte Carlo right now. Definitely ceramics.
  • A rack of Paulson's $5 Empress chips are set to expire in Ebay Wednesday. The guy is in PEI so no border fees. I know nothing about this sale though so can't vouch for him.

Those are primaries, and worn. Note the rounded edges . . . nice enough chip, but I would not pay more than the $35.00 currently listed, maybe $40.00 if they help add to a set you already have.
  • I would think this is a decent deal for a brand new cash set of Tophat and Canes... but I'm no expert. Paulsons no longer makes home sets so they should keep thier value.

  • I'm currently in the process of designing my own custom set, should be fun.. I'd love to get a set of CPC chips but that might be a litttttle pricey right now i'm not sure.
  • It is fun playing around with the chip designer tool on that site, going to take awhile to find something i'm reallly happy with, going to try to get the contact info for this j5 guy i keep hearing about
  • J5 is TOP DRAWER. His work is awesome.
  • Has he done any work for you? What are your favorite works by him?

I contacted him and he is quite busy at the moment but that works for me as I really am in no rush

He also designed the Pharoah's chips linked above.

Unfortunately hotstamping died out and I never got these made. I may resurrect them as custom labels at a future time.

If I remember correctly, he designed the Ching Hill chips for AJ years ago, as well as the Pharoah's moose mentioned. Nothing for me . . . my obsession was more for cards. But there are a few people over on Poker Chip Forum with his designs on their sets and they are just beautiful.
  • Yes. And the Paulsons before that.
  • I'm ready to upgrade to a real set of chips. Have found this thread very helpful in trying to educate myself on the subject. Have decided to take the plunge and invest in a real clay set.

    Have a few questions:
What is the difference between primary and secondary sets?
    What is crosshatching?
How big is the difference between Paulsons and CPC chips?
Would you recommend getting a different set for cash and tournaments?

Was as looking at the Horseshoe Cincinnati set here:

    https://www.pokerchipforum.com/threads/horseshoe-tournament-chip-sale.19182/

Seems like a good deal to me but they have been listed for almost 4 months and I wondering if I'm missing something?
  • I'm sure Moose will chime in with way more detail than I can provide:

Primary vs Secondary - Primaries have been used on casino floor, Secondary's typically haven't been used on casino floor.

Paulson for the last couple years is only available casino market, certainly on poker chip forum you will find some "fantasy chips" from when Paulson sold to the home market. CPC is a manufacturer that produces chips for the individual market, typically you would produce your own artwork and pick chip colours and edgespots. I've briefly looked at this, It can get pricey quickly but if you want a one of kind set you can do it.

Typically you want to make sure tournament and cash chips don't share similar chips, eg somebody could slip 25 or 100 denominations into the cash game from tournament and all of sudden your cash is short for the night. Obviously more of an issue if you through both a cash and tournament in same night.

The reason the Cincinnati chips are still around is because a couple of months prior to Cincy being released, Cleveland chips were released at a much larger quantity and cheaper. Market was for the most part filled up.

Have to run, but I'm sure Rob or Jeff will chime in.
  • Thanks for the input woog. Much appreciated.
  • The Cincinnati chips may be sold and just not updated. The tourney chips I do not like because they are 36mm whereas the regular size is 39mm. To me they feel like playing poker with Rocket candy.

Cross hatching is the surface pattern molded into the chip to give it grip in stacks.

HQ on pokerchip forum is selling a couple of cheap used Paulson cash sets right now. It's a good deal.
  • Thanks for the info moose!

Would love to have the Aztar set as my best friend is from Evansville. Currently working on getting Mr. Gottaget on board.

Are the cash chips at Brantford 39mm? Not sure I have ever handled a 36mm chip just trying to get an idea of what they might feel like.
  • yes 39
  • Come to my cash game on Fri and I can show you 36 mm chips.
  • Thanks Moose but we are going to the cave Friday. Would it be ok if we drop by after if we are out early?
  • Thanks Moose!
    Thanks Woog also!

Ughhh...Mr. Gottaget had just given me the go-ahead on the Aztar Evansville set when I got a pm from HQ that someone else had pm'd him with interest before me.
  • Damn, I really want to own a set of Paulsons...the prices are just silly now though and don't seem to be much available.

I've been looking at some fantasy sets and while very nice a couple of the chips seem off and dull...I thought a project over time to build a mix set, I just wish there was a gallery of all chips and colors that was easy to go through

There are still some Paulson chips available here and here I believe, and you probably can't find a better price than that for new Paulsons.

What do you think of these

Sure paying a little bit more but they seem to be excellent condition...though don't know what I think about the mold.

They made both normal and non-denom sets....then there are china clay copies etc. The home mold is nice but maybe not quite as nice as the standard Top Hat and Cane mold. But trying to build a set can be difficult and pricey. The Pharaoh's are my favourite set indeed.
