Rules on asking for a chip count

Was playing a Holdem tourney with my regular crew a couple of night ago when an interesting question came up. I was in an important hand at the time, up against the chip lead, facing a large bet. I wanted to know what my position might be at the end of the hand, so I was curious as to the
chip count of the short stack, who was not in the hand.

Is that allowed, or can I only ask players who are in the hand?
Are there any official rules on this? A quick web search leads me to
believe that a player who is in the hand is allowed to ask about anyone's
chip stack, as long as it helps him/her with a decision.

  • agreed... However, continually asking for chip counts is bad form...
  • Chipstack sizes are public information and can be asked for at anytime, by anybody, of anyone.

Agreed. Since stack sizes are very important to make a $EV-maximizing decision, I have asked for a chip count many times, including a player not in the hand.

Unfortunately, every cardroom can have different house rules. At OLG Point Edward Casino, a guy raised near the money bubble with the usual disorganized stacks. I obviously asked for a chip count of what he had behind but to my shock, the dealer interrupted the player from counting and said that asking for a chip count was not allowed. I said, "Are you kidding me?!" and called for the floor, who verified the stooopid house rule. Point Edward is the only card room I have ever encountered that has a rule against chip counts! :o
  • You may recall Tiffany Michele just pointing at her stack in the WSOP when someone asked for a chip count. There is no requirement for chip counts. The only rule in Roberts or TDA requires that all chips be visible. There is no chip count rule. If a player does a chip count, it is at their option.

However a rule preventing chip counts seem wierd.

  • Moose is right, players are under no obligation to give you a chip count but need to have all chips (including high denomination ones) visible.

Same as most places won't tell you how much is in the pot but the dealer will spread it for you if you ask.

Couldn't be more different situations ever compared...
