CPO Event #5 hand

This is the hand I am most happy with that I played recently.

$550Nl Freezout at the Canadian Poker Open.

We are about 2 hrs in and I get moved to a new table. And it is not a good move, Herb Van Dyke owner of WPS and WSOP HORSE event final tablist is in seat ten. I am in seat one. Seat five hosts a player I watched playing the 25-25-50 DC game with 30k cash in front of him the night before.

I pick up 44 in late position, a couple players limp in and "High Stakes" pumps it up.

He has been playing very aggresively and being a PLO guy, I know he can play a wide range. I call and an early position player calls. I also know he is waiting to play cash and isn't really into the tourney.

Flop comes down 4 K 3 rainbow. Player one checks and "High Stakes" checks supisiously, with kinda a shit eating grin on.

I know he has a piece. I have started this table fairly passively, both a little nervous about my opponents and with this being only my second $550, a little tight as I don't want to disapoint my backer and bust out foolishly early.

I know what my image is and figure a weakish bet will stimulate action here. I figure if I open the door....

I bet 700 into a pot of close to 2k. Player in early calls and "High Stakes" moves all in for over 5k more. He has me covered, but I know I am going with him. Player in early has had a few beers and is already looking to put his in so I put mine in the middle.

"High stakes" holds KJ, early a str8 draw and my set triples me up to over 16k!

I was happy with this hand because it played out how I wanted it to and because a pro player from Vegas had no real read on me. He had nice things to say and at my level, I felt this was a good milestone.

    Congrats.

Not to rain on your parade but....
Be careful, his nice things might be translated, "This guy calls with low implied odds with a low pocket pair.."

As opposed to him calling with 56?
  • I don't think it's fair to call it low implied odds when we don't know what the preflop raise was or what the blinds were at. A little more information would make it easier to tell if this was a smart play or a loose call. I'd have to say that, having pegged one guy as a loose cannon and another as partly drunk, both of which have him outchipped, right there I'm thinking it's a good call because the implied odds of getting them both to double him up are quite good, which is exactly what happened. Again though, depends on how high the blinds are, whether there were antes and how much the raise was.
  • Cerberus answered for me here, how am I getting low implied odds? It was somewhere around a 3 bet preflop and since 2.5 is standard and I knew he was playing anything agressively, I figured he put his chips in easy. I knew he was antsy to play ring and that he was going to ram and em till he was a contender early or felted.

His comments, I believe they were legit, he was a good guy.

Early in the tourney, I don't flop a set I'm done.
