Bad Beat or Stupid call?

Okay, so I'm in the big blind and call the raise holding J7o. I don't think this is a totally bad play as I'm in the BB so it's half the bet to 2 callers right.

So am I an idiot for calling the raise from BB or is this actually a bad beat.

Bring it on and don't hold back. this is the first hand I've asked for feedback on and probably should have done so before now.

Thanks in advance

  • I don't think it was exactly the greatest call with J7, but putting that aside I think the rest of the hand was just unlucky. Pretty sick, but it happens.

Yeah, was folding the BB through the first round with terrible hands so wanted to at least not roll over.... to a min raise.

    Thanks,
  • The problem with J7 against 2 players, is unless u hit a miracle flop like this (which obviously wasnt so miraculous in the long run), even if u hit either card, you have to put your opponent on a better kicker so its hard to continue in the hand.

very true, should move this to the Analyze Hand section.....not really a bad beat. just punishment for being impatient
  • Ummm, the old tight guy doesn't agree with Graham here, when the action gets to you preflop you have to call 120 into a pot of 600. Your getting 5-1 on your money. As long as the stacks are deep enough (implied odds) I call with any 2 cards here, looking to hit 3 of a kind or 2 pair. You played it fine, just very unfortunate. You got your money in as a 76-13 favorite. Do that every day, all day long, and soon you will be rich...

Agreed, though I'd likely just fold 94o-, 83o-, and 72o.
I'd call J7 all day, as long as you won't overcommit on a JT4 flop or something.

Yea, what do I know... so unless you hit 2pr or 3 of a kind are you folding any pair post flop without any reads on the opponent?
  • The call preflop is fine given the stacks. You just have to accept that a J 9 2 flop does not mean you stack off happily. You kind of got a silly flop but ones of J 7x or 77x etc may lead to something at these stakes levels against people who play their AA/KK hands really strange.

Regarding what happened after the flop, not sure what to say, I guess if you want to avoid a bad beat then fold the nut boat on the flop. He had a higher kicker so he had ways to win the hand.

as long as you can withstand the variance. blah blah blah...

More than likely, unless I hit "1 pair" and it's a small bet on the flop to give me odds to draw the turn...

I guess with the sevens on the full there is that chance. Overbet the hand though I think. Too happy to get it all in there on one round.

    Thanks for the feedback

+1....given your stack size, with the odds.....I'm calling any two most of the time.

When flopping the nuts, get all the money in on the flop, and getting beat, always qualifies for a bad beat IMHO (unless you're playing PLO of course).
