How could I have played this better

Don't have much info on villan, he just arrived at table 6 or 7 hands ago, limped into pots, never raising. When he called my bet I though he might have a weak Ace, after the fop though the same thing, turn maybe AJ, should I have bet more preflop, and lead out with a bigger raise post flop, or was I just unlucky?

  • Unlucky! Move on
  • why push the load when the donkey will pull?

you gotta wonder what he had on the flop. and on the turn. i likely would have check/called or, heaven forbid, check/folded the river. about the only possible hand that might have called you that you were beating was TT.

people may argue this but i am not a big fan of your bet sizing on the flop or turn. with a flop that dry, you don't need a pot-sized bet. if he has nothing, he won't even call a half-pot bet. so when he does call, you have to put him on an overpair, 9, or you have to tell me he is a complete moron who can't fold A5s (, in which case, huge bets are great). same story on the turn. TT might even fold at that point so you aren't beating much of anything. so no, don't raise more preflop and don't bet more on the flop. that only wins you the least and loses you the most.

p.s. next time, i suggest you don't post results and you are likely to get less biased responses. since you actually asked for feedback, you could have put this in the nl forum and it actually could have lead to some discussion. imagine that, discussion of a poker hand on a poker forum...

At these limits a ton of players call huge but rarely bet, so even though the flop sort of falls in the "what could he have that calls" category, the fact is that if he does have a lower over pair he will stack off, he may call a bet with A rag (and why give a free card and see a K or ace hit)

Assuming he is the 70/0 type of player, I would have the full stack in by the turn, as I tend to vastly overbet preflop and on the flop vs players like this. I tend to raise preflop to 8 to 12 BB against them as they just like seeing flops.

Not sure what to say to the OPs" how do I play this differently" question. I guess fold preflop or something.
  • Thanks for the feed back guys. Any info is helpful if it helps me from making the same mistakes. Next time I will post in the discuss my hand forum where it belongs. Again thanks for the info.
  • Yea I think I would have slowed down after he called the flop/turn, but its still tough to get away from if he shoves. Unlucky.
