A Good Turn Card…

Hosted a cash game one Saturday evening…, had about 12 to 14 people or so…, blind structure started at $0.25/$0.50 and goes up every hour. Generally, your pot wins are small in comparison to some of the other ring games out there but there are times where it can get out of proportion especially in the later rounds (or if everyone is holding a descent hand PF or a even great drawing hand after the flop – yes, the group loves their straight and flush draw like there’s no tomorrow).icon12.gif

One particular hand (now at the $2/$4 level) things got a little interesting. Started just like any of the other hands…, no PF raise, a couple of callers from MP and LP, I limped on the button with 98o, SB calls and BB checks to see a cheap flop. There were 6 of us at this point. I am thinking that no one is holding a descent hand and at best, they are most likely holding two low/mid cards, connectors, sooooooted, perhaps someone with an ace-rag, no pairs, etc.

Flop comes 5-A-7 w/ two clubs. MP checks around to the gal in LP and she bets out $7 (?!?! ??? – this is normally her standard bet when she somehow “connects” with the flop). At first, I’m obviously thinking that a $7 bet is small in comparison to the pot. Secondly, from how she played the entire evening, I can only put her on an automatic draw (ie something like four to the flush, possibly an open ender, or perhaps a pair of 5 or 7 but highly unlikely). Pot odds dictate that I should atleast call and see the turn card, after all I’m last to act and can fold the hand if nothing materializes. SB folds, BB calls, one player in MP calls while the other folded leaving us with 4 left on a $50 pot or so.

Turn comes a red 6 BINGO!!! MP checks and the lady bets out $15. By leading out, I am thinking she definitely has something solid - maybe even two pairs (there’s a possibility that she might even have top pair to go along with her open ender but the flush is now a distant third or she would’ve checked to see the river as cheaply as possible). Knowing that I have the nut straight with two callers behind me, I simply didn’t want for someone to just call there and get blind sided by the third club on 5th street so I pushed for all of my remaining $70 chips in the hopes of isolating the cutie and take down a nice pot (plus I cover the chick by almost 2-1).

Play comes around to the BB (who is the chip leader) and he thinks and contemplates for like the longest time ever…, wondering why I would push all-in for. I guess my move to go all-in didn’t make any sense to him whatsoever especially if I had a big hand! He figured that I would atleast slow play. It finally came to me that he too might have a hand (perhaps the one hand that can call a $70 all-in bet with). At this point, I don’t even see him calling with the nut flush draw! He’s simply not that type! So now, I’m saying forget the crap about isolating the chick…., go ahead and call, call, call – just call alreadyicon8.gif!!!!!! And so minutes later, he did…, MP folds and the chick decides to join the fun and goes all-in as well!

She immediately shows two pairs 5 and 7…, I declared the nut straight as I looked over the chip leader in disarray as his nagging wife cursed him for playing such crappy hands like 34o!!!! I watched the river produced a paint card as I raked in close to $250 pot. Bottom line, I got lucky and I don't know how else I can play this any different but I'm glad it worked out in my favour. Raked in close to $350 by the end of the night!:)

  • I love th gut shot nut straight cards. The only problem is the stacks weren't deep enough, you want to win at least double that. ;)
