What do you think of how i played this?

It was early in a 120 player $100 buyin tourney and I got dealt AJo. The guy on the button min raises it and I call UTG. I think that BB called as well. Anyways..

Flop comes Jd 8d Jh.

BB checks I bet 3x BB and the button calls me. BB then folds.

Turn card comes 7c.

I check, button raises it half hte pot I go all in and then he calls. He flips over J10o and I think damn I got this.

River card comes 9s.

So I end up losing this hand but do you think I played this wrong? It was still in the first set of blinds, we started out with 2000 in chips and I was up about 500 already.

  • I think you played it well and got unlucky.

Button makes a standard raise. Your hand is certainly good enough to make the call. If you had position I would say raise but the call seems fine to me.

You hit a great flop, got all of your money in with the best hand and got a caller then got unlucky.

so... you limped UTG with AJo? in a 100 buy-in? yuck.
  • Yea... calling with AJ UTG is about the lamest thing ever.

Other than that, you put $ in ahead.

  • I don't hate the limp with AJ in first position however I think with the re-opening of the action you may want to define your hand strength next time a little better. Consider a limp re-raise with AJ just to find out where you are in this situation.

AJ is a toughy utg but I would think 'in general' you would want to pop it up a bit preflop rather then the call or fold options. An aggressive table, I don't mind limping here with the expectation of re-poping or trapping the right player. You need some pretty solid post flop play to trap with this hand though.

  • I have to disagree with you there stpboy..

I don't think AJ is a strong enough hand to be RE-raising OOP... my angle here is either raise or fold. I'm assuming this is a full table.

You have WAY too many people behind you. Raise it up, and if you get re-popped, you have to consider throwing it away.

Personally, based on strength of cards alone, I get iffy around AQo re-raises. I'll re-raise against poor players who just like to raise anything or on a pure steal with a wider range... but AJ UTG repop makes me ill.

    What a sick avatar stpboy

  • Since its still in the first blind level, just limping there is not that bad
  • you're all arguing needlessly, the op doesn't contain enough info to decide whether to limp or raise..both have merits.

If it is 2k starting with blinds at 25-25 with a dealer and 20 min levels/online, your action can be different than if it is 2k starting with blinds at 100/200 self-dealt in a bar.

OP give us all the info so we can offer sound advice.

My point was more around, "if you are planning on limping with this hand (which is an option of course), then you may want to consider defining your hand preflop by raising at some point if the action re-opens". I think that limping and just calling is the most difficult way to play this hand. The only place you know for certain if your hand is good against any decent player would be showdown (save hitting the nuts).

    The blinds were at 50/100
  • live self-dealt bar tournament? I forget the specifics...but I think we were arguing the way to play a-jo utg, it is live s/d- I like being a little bit more frisky with it. Since you're going to see like three hands/blind level and are playing donkeys.
