Just wanted to do a quick poll and find out the reasons people like one format over the other. Note, you cannot use this thread to sign up ;)

you should be able to do a double rebuy if you bust out. so starting stack or less.

I preferred the Starting Stack or less option. You can be at a huge disadvantage to rebuy on bustout unless you are a push monkey from the get go.
With starting stack or less, you can actually play some poker during the rebuy period and get a feel for wheter you want to rebuy or not.
  • It depends...

If you're the host you don't want to keep selling rebuys nearly every freaking hand.

There is a rebuy strategy where you play pushbot to build a mountain of chips on your table before the rebuy period ends. Then you play tight aggressive after that. This strategy can be blunted by giving the players deep stacks during the rebuy period.

I've used pushbot strategy online, but if it were at a home game it would drive the host nuts so I don't do it in home games.
  • Having played in a number of rebuy formats at casinos, clubs and home games, Casino Brantford has the best format, i.e.,
    - can rebuy only if less than starting chips, e.g., if less than 1000, buy 500 more chips for $20
    - can do double rebuys if 0 - 1/2 of starting chips, e.g., if less than 500 chips, buy 1000 chips for $40
    - discounted and unlimited rebuys, e.g., 1000 starting chips for $50+$5, but only $40 for 1000-chip rebuy
    - discounted add-on, e.g., 2000 chips at end of rebuy period for only $40.

Just like AcidJoe's good rebuy tournament, extra rebuy stacks can be put beside a designated person at each table so the host is not overwhelmed giving rebuys for all the tables.

But doesn't that just multiply the chip problem by x2 if people are getting silly?

I agree with the previous response, just have a cup full of rebuys in the largest chips possible and let the table police themselves (we are typically talking about 4 tables or less here).

I have thought about this too and it has been widely discussed in some online blogs and rebuy strategy writeups (Dan N for one). So there are some simple options:
    a) limit the rebuys to something reasonable like 5 or 10
    b) publicise that after the rebuy period is over, the seating will be shuffled (I really like this idea)
  • a) limit the rebuys to something reasonable like 5 or 10
The more rebuys that a maniac does, the less likely he is to get his money back even if he manages to make it to the money, while he is building up the prize pool for everybody else. If you have a multiple rebuy format, there is no point in limiting the number of rebuys. Each player should have the choice of doing zero rebuys or donating as many rebuys as he wants.
    b) publicise that after the rebuy period is over, the seating will be shuffled (I really like this idea)
If you want to do seat redraws, I think the best time to do it is in the second half of the rebuy period and not after the rebuys are over. This way, even if one redrawn table has only short stacks, the table still has a chance to increase the stacks.
  • You've summed it up perfectly Reef/waterlooser.

For a trustworthy home game it should be unlimited double rebuys with a cup.

The thing that kills me the most is the one-time rebuy, single worst idea ever.
  • I would have picked the first one.. on total bust out as long as there is unlimited rebuys for the first few levels.. or hour or however that works..

I love going to those and watching Mario and Mark and Joe play.. THey go crazy.. lol :)
