Huge tourny in Oshawa

My name is Chris, I am the head coach of the Durham Chiefs Baseball Club. We are hosting a large tournament on March 31st, beginning at 1:00pm in Oshawa (email for location).
We are hoping for 128+ players, and have room for up to 200. This is a NL Hold’em Tourny, it has a $50 buy in, with a 1 time only re-buy (only if you are out of chips) for either ½ or full amount of original chip count (eg: $25 gets you 1000 chip value and $50 gets you 2000 chip value).
Last year we held this at Jack Astor’s in Whitby, we had 75 players. We decided to make it bigger and hopefully better this time, hope to see you there, feel free to bring as many players as you want.
Alcohol and Pizza will be sold at the event. You must be at least 19 yrs old to attend.
Please email me and let me know if you are interested or would like more details.
Thank you
CHRIS

  • Update:
We have 96 players confirmed now!!
  • Are you setting a cap to this? I'll most likely play, just haven't confirmed yet.

Looks to be capped at 200 players.

  • Well the hall wont accomodate over 200 players, so that would be the cap.
  • Is there a time limit on the rebuy?
  • Structure?
  • I'm in Guelph. How far is Oshawa from here??

Mapquest is your friend, 4000 miles...
  • I think theres a short cut if you head the other direction.

    Guelph, On to Oshawa, On
    139 km (about 1 hour 39 mins)
  • The rebuys (you must go broke) MUST be done before 1st break. After the 1st break is done, no more rebuys. Also, Guelph to Oshawa is about 1.5 hrs.
The blind structure is as follows:
    SMALL BIG ANTE
    25 50
    50 100
    75 150
    100 200
    Re-buys Ended
    150 300 25
    200 400 25
    300 600 25
    400 800 50
    Colour Up $25 Chips
    500 1000 100
    600 1200 100
    800 1600 200
    1000 2000 200
    Colour Up $100
    1500 3000 500
    2000 4000 500
    3000 6000 500
    4000 8000 500
    Colour Up $500
    6000 12000 1000
    8000 16000 1000
    10000 20000 1000
    15000 30000 1000

Ouch, my tourney director ears! Introducing antes at the same time as increasing the blinds can get a guy banned in these parts ;) Other than that, nice structure!

    /g2
  • I sent my old structure....
Other than a few changes in the antes its all the same....
The second level stays $25 all the way and the 3rd level is $100 across

    Thanks for noticing....
    Are you coming??
  • One more question. How much of the prize pool will be left for the payers?

Sorry, I live only 2 letters away from you [Ottawa], but unfortunately that translates to 400km.

    /g2
  • We are keeping 20% to pay for the hall, liquor license, more chips, insurance, etc.
So 80% of money paid into (including rebuys) is paid back.
    Thanks for asking.
  • I have a couple of friends coming in from Ottawa, one of them runs Pub 101

i want THIS guy at all my tournies!

best of luck with your tourney.
  • LOL!!
    Nice....!
    Are you coming Pkrfce??
  • i think i'll still be busy running through the logic on the 'running it x times' concept.

    but i wish you well.
  • hi Chris, the blind structure looks good, but the starting chip count of 2000 seems kinda low with 25-50 starting blinds for the "skill" factor to really play a big part in the tourny. It looks as though you will NEED to get lucky and catch big hands within the first 3 blind levels in order to survive past the 1st break, or else get withered away by the blinds. Even to play any pots, the average pot size by the 50-100 blind level (assuming a normal (3x) raise and bet on flop) will have you investing 30-40% of your stack. I just think a large tourny like this should really promote the players who can PLAY poker, and not just get lucky. A starting chip count of 5000 will allow for more play and increase the skill factor. Or a restructuring of the blind structure to be 10-20, 20-40, 30-60, 50-100 before the 1st break. Just wondering what you think about this?
  • HI, I appreciate the help!! I kindof have to do it this way for a couple of reasons. 1- I want to try to get some rebuys as they will increase the pot and 2- It worked well last year and everyone seemed to like it (if not broke why fix it?) 3- I only have a certain amount of chips available (we have our team's logo on the chips to prevent people bringing in chips).....
    Thanks again!!
  • how many players do you have currently?
  • We have 127 players confirmed by me. The other players on my team dont know nearly as many people who play poker, so I expect them to bring in around 25-40 players more. We can seat up to 200 players.
  • will you take walk ins ? not sure i can play that day or not.
  • Well, I am taking the first 200 players that come. So if you can come, get there early, lets play some poker:)
  • are the dealers going to be provided or do we have to deal ourselves?

I am an "organized tournament" virgin, and don't really know what to expect.
  • Hey bud,
The dealers are the players themselves, until we get to the final 2 tables, then dealers are going to be provided.

I am deleting this thread now.....

If you can figure out how to do that (other than getting the mods to do it)... let me know. Thanks.
