How would you play this?

This hand came up at the $500 BCC tournament. I have had some interesting discussion with some friends about how this should have been played.

Blinds 400-800 w/50 ante

Table chip leader raised to 2400 in mid position. Folded to me in the BB. I pinch QQ. I started the hand with about $14,800, the raiser has approximately $38,000. What would you do?

  • I'm assuming full table of 10 people here, so the pot starts with $1700

Chip leader's raise makes the pot $4100. Since we're obviously raising here, I'd probably do one of two things....

A: Raise a decent amount, say maybe 6500
    or
    B: Push all in

Now on A, I think a lot of people will agree, and it's a pretty standard play. On B there'll be some "What?!??"'s I'm sure.... but here is why I would consider it:

A: Each pot starts with 1700, with your 14, 800 remaining, your M value is about 8.5-9, however, I'm going to assume several things:
    - BCC blind schedule is likely quick, and you'll be facing an increase soon
    - Chip leaders are a pain to play against, so put the pressure on them
    - With his raise, the pot is now going to increase your stack size by about
    30%
    - There is a possibility that he'll see it as a move (though you've not put in any information about table image for either player) and call.
    - It will hopefully keep him off your BB.

P.S. - Sorry he had KK
  • What kind of player is the chip leader? What kind of hands can you put him on? Is he tight and will he fold if you come over the top? Is he aggressive then perhaps you can call and let him bet into you? You're not desperate yet but I think you are getting close to push time and without any other information I don't think it would be a bad play to just push here. Depending on his style you might get more chips out of him using the old 'rope-a-dope' and smooth call letting him lead into you then come over the top on the turn or river but that's a riskier play and without more info I dunno? Tough call, with AA or KK I would be more likely to try the second approach but with QQ or JJ I think your chances of getting out drawn are better and I may be more inclined to push? I still think more info is needed but I'd likely push here and hope to double up, if he folds you still pull in a decent pot.
  • Sorry, I left a few things out. We were 9 handed, blind increase in the next 15 min., too soon for table image as I had just been moved to the table.

I did push, he called with 10-10, flopped a set, home I go.

I thought my play was correct, I had the best hand, got all my money in, just took a beat. I was thinking about doing option "A", but felt that he would call and if any A or K on the flop, I pretty much have to fold, and would be forced to go all in the next hand I played.
  • Yea...

It's usually right to go in the dominant favorite...... Hey Zithal, how many sided dice chance is this?

  • This one's easy.. Rolling a 1 on a 5-sided die. :)
