What's your play?

Literally the 2 hand at the table, I unfortunately know nothing about the players...other than they are also playing LL NL on Stars.

So, to this point I bet the flop without a H in the hopes of taking it down there, slightly over a 1/2 pot sized bet and get 1 caller. I assumed then, maybe rightly or wrongly that he had Ah

*** TURN *** [Qh 6h 4h] [4d]

Ok, turn seems to be a harmless non heart 4. Now what? Still seemed wrong to check, if you bet, how much?

Wolffhound: bets $
Sevenoff7: calls $

River- As

So, with 3 hearts on the flop, you fired twice and got called, I assumed he had the Ah (given the call, call), now the A hits.

Now what?

Comments

  • If you're sure he has Ah, then check/call. Personally, I would rather have him on QXh and he missed his flush draw. If that's more likely I would lead out.
  • Right now I give up. But that's how today has gone for me. I had a similiar hand only in position, checked to me and the caller called until the A hit then he lead out. I make a $6 bet post flop and see what happens. Then if I still think I"m ahead I probably make it $10 on the turn, Certainly check the river.
  • you don't really want to play big pot poker with nothing more than an overpair. i would check the turn.

it is low limit nl so if you are sure he has the Ah, he won't fold the river. a big bet might get a weak ace to fold but without a read you are just pissing your money away. i might check/call a small bet relative to the size of the pot but i don't know why.

you really have to think about what hands call a decent pre-flop raise from the SB and an almost pot-sized bet on the flop OOP. could be a medium pp with a heart but more likely AJ+ or Axh. i guess it really depends on the player and you have no idea who you are up against here.

i would look for a better chance to double up if that is what you are thinking here.
  • The hand in the end worked out, I was just pretty sure that I didn't play it well at all.

Thank you to those that commented.

  • oh man! that guy sucked hard.

what would tony g say about it?
  • For whatever it's worth, I think you played it fairly well. I might have made a larger bet on the turn, to REALLY discourage any drawing. This guy seems like he enjoys calling...
  • Checking the turn is fine against an unknown. At low limits I'm pretty sure you're losing value by checking though. If you do bet the turn it needs to be a big bet though, at least $10. Check river and probably fold to a big bet.

Thanks Mike, that's one big part of the hand that I knew I had wrong.

Eclispe, no need to "for what its worth", feedback from everyone is appreciated. (at least by me).
  • I like checking the river there. Your opponent probably SHOULD make a 1/2 pot bet just based on your actions, but leave it up to him to have the balls to do it. He may give you good odds to call or make it very easy to fold or even (in your case) check the river and give the pot to you for free.

Thanks. I also think the check on the river is a good move.

I don't really know where I'm at compared to most of the guys here... some of you seem like real pros. I can dominate most all of the live games I play with friends/relatives, but most of them are fairly weak. I want to play with some really strong players just to see how I would handle it and maybe learn a few things.

Like I said, I'm up quite a bit of money playing live games, but I've gotta reload after making my first buy-in now at PokerStars... made the mistake of playing a really loose-aggressive game. Works well at some tables, but a lot of online players are too loose. Actually, I wasn't doing THAT badly, but I took a pretty harsh beat for a huge pot that lost most of it for me. Are those pokerforum private tourneys being held anymore?
