Tournament structure

I'm going to be running a tournament and want some feedback of the structure.
Everyone is starting out 5000 in chips and the rounds are 20 minutes long. There are going to be dealers.
25-50
50-100
75-150
100-200
200-400
300-600
400-800
500-1000
800-1600
1000-2000
1500-3000
2000-4000
3000-6000
4000-8000
5000-10000
8000-16000
10000-20000
15000-30000

I'm expecting 44 players and it is a freeze out.

  • Looks good except for the 500/1000 and 5000/10000 levels. You go from 500 to 800 to 1000 (and 5000 to 8000 to 10000), which means your increment is 300 then 200. It "feels weird" to have the increases "slow down", so maybe replace the 500/1000 with 600/1200 (and the 5000/10000 with 6000/12000) which would even things out a bit. Only other things is that with 44 players it will probably end around the 4000/8000 level (or 5000/10000), so if you can afford the extra time, maybe cap it there (to prevent bingo). Other than that, looks good.
  • Your tournament structure is much better than most of the illegal raked tournaments. The Skill Level is 4. While most club tournaments are basically crapshoots with a Skill Level of 0 to 2, the next three tournaments I will be playing in have Skill Levels of 5 or 6. 8)

With 220,000 chips in play, I would estimate that it would end at around the 8,000-16,000 level, which means over 5 hours of playing time (plus breaks). Can I play in your tournament? :D
  • Thanks Beanie42. I've changed the 800-1600 and the 8000-16000 levels to 700-1400 and 7000-14000. This way it goes up 200 to 300.

Thanks Blondfish for your input also. How do you figure out the skill level of a tournament? Is there a formula?
If everything goes well with this tournament i will be doing it around every month or two. This tournament is a $90 buy in. In the future i want to try a tournament with the same blinds, but 30 minute levels and 8,000 chips to start.
  • I think I've read an article about how to rate the skill level of a tournament, but I can't remember where. I'd also appreciate it if you filled us in Blondfish.

And I'd also be interested in playing in your game, especially the deepstack/30 minute levels one.

  • Arnold Snyder has written about Skill Levels, Patience Factor, Final Table ETA and other formula. I can figure out the Skill Level of any tournament as long as I know the blind schedule, starting stack and number of players per table. An underground poker club wants to hold good tournaments, so they have asked me to recommend a tournament structure.

Can you share the information on how to figure out the skill level of a tournament?
  • If folks will be dealing themselves and passing the deck around....especially around rectangular tables and aren't so great..

You may want to consider adding 5 minutes to the opening levels. This offsets novice dealing, just a thought.
  • Thanks Sloth, but there are going to be dealers there.
  • What city are you in, if all goes well for you i'd like to get in on your next one.
I am also curious as to the secret formula on skill levels.

Here is a link you may want to look at to read about skill levels

  • I live in Toronto and am doing the tournament in Mississauga.
  • I've found a excel spreadsheet that will give you the patience factor and skill level.
    You can go http://www.pokertournamentformula.com/

and on the left side under new poker articles. It's called mathboy's patience factor calculater.
  • And now i have my final tournament structure.

    25-25
    25-50
    50-100
    100-200
    200-400
    300-600
    400-800
    500-1000
    700-1400
    1000-2000
    1500-3000
    2000-4000
    3000-6000
    4000-8000
    5000-10000
    7000-14000
    10000-20000
They will be 20 minute rounds with 5000 chips to start. That has a patience level of 7.3 and a skill level of 4.

When i do the 30 minute rounds and 8000 chips to start it will have a patince level of 17.08 and a skill level of 6.

I took out the 75-150 round and added the 25-25 level. I find the 75-150 level slow because you have to make change all the time.

  • I finally did the tournament. I had 39 players and everyone got 6,000 in chips to start. It went from 5 pm to 11 pm.
    The blind levels where
    25-25
    25-50
    50-100
    100-200
    200-400
    300-600
    400-800
    500-1000
    700-1400
    1000-2000
    1500-3000
    2000-4000
    3000-6000
    4000-8000
    5000-10000 and it ended here.
The round where 20 minutes in length. After i ran cash games of 50cent-50cent no limit. $10 min $40 max.
