Online Coaching Session

For those who have paid for a poker coach, how do you get the most out out of an hour of cash game coaching? A pro that I admire has agreed to give me one hour of coaching, but I've never used Skype and haven't played in PokerStars in years (was a PartyPoker grinder).

I don't even know if my five-year old laptop is good enough for an online coaching session without technical problems taking up much of the session. Any advice?

Hand history review. Or go through all the hands from a tournament.

might get a better response on 2+2 for this kind of thing. Hand history would make the most sense or go through some of the hands you think you may have played better or extracted more value, etc. Although, I don't know if their advice will transfer well to live cash games, which I think you usually play more of anyways.

Personally, if you are already doing well playing live cash games, then I would keep doing what you are doing. You may find that getting advice may change the way you normally play and it may actually not work in your favour. I can see coaching being more beneficial to a losing player.

Now if someone could teach me how to stop getting my money in the middle as a big favourite, and stop getting sucked out on, I would pay them a fortune :)

:biggrin: Everybody can use something that will help them keep improving in this Darwinian Game of Thrones - "You win or you die!" Even Daniel Negreanu the poker millionaire had realized that he was falling far behind the online pros like all the other old poker heroes from TV, but after a lot of coaching and hard work, he is one of the few veterans that can still compete with the Waterloo pros.

If I want to improve the most for cash games, wouldn't it be better for the pro to rail me via Skype or from behind as I tell him my thought process for each action? I'm taking care of several pros for all their WPT Fallsview entries, and I'm hoping there will be one hour of down time when I can play a PokerStars cash game on my laptop or iPad Air, while "the pro rails me from behind" - figuratively speaking, pkrfce9, not literally!

That's probably a violation of T/C, even if they are just "coaching"

Even some Las Vegas casinos allow somebody to sit behind you and watch you play. If there is no T&C official rule against the unethical act of ghosting online, which T&C rule would prohibit somebody from just watching you play??

I remember PartyPoker's T&C officially prohibiting sharing of hand histories, so all coaching would be technically a violation! I'll ask the PokerStars VIP rep about how to learn from a coach ethically.

It can be a tricky thing to get value from coaching. So much of poker is subjective and certain plays will work for one player and fail for another depending on the context of their overall style. For this reason, the easiest way to get value from a coach is for them to fix clear leaks. For him to fix your leaks, he needs to see them happen via play or via reviewing hands. However, there is also a ton of value to be gained by understanding the coach's successful overall approach to the game. So pick some brains, while they are available to you!

Not sure if you make notes from each session you play.

But your best coach is your own notes, experience.

I make notes from all my session, and review regularly.

Yes, I have 3 gigabytes of notes! Good poker books have always been my best-value profit-booster, but I'm sure I will benefit from a session with a coach who's in the Global Poker Index Top 150.

Let me know how your session goes Buddy. I will be working with a very successful online pro for the next few weeks to improve my game as well.

I got coached a bit in 2009 when i was trying to figure out 100nl rush games on ftp after movin up a bit, it was done with a combo of HH review and live sweating. The coach remained silent 95% of the time w/ mic off but could pop it back on and make minor comments. Pretty sure this is legal as he would only pop on the mic after a hand was over to tell me things i did wrong lol
