Volunteers Needed for University of Manitoba Research Study

Academic research has often assumed that people who play poker or gamble have some kind of mental problem (Kusyszyn, 1978), when, in fact there almost no research done to see if this is the case. That’s why the University of Manitoba is looking for poker players who are willing to respond to an online questionnaire about mental health and addiction. If you:

• Are 18 years or older
• Can read and write in English
• Have played any kind of poker in any setting in the past year

• Are willing to volunteer 10 minutes of your time to fill out a quick online questionnaire to aid gambling research

This research project is for my honours thesis in my last year of my Bachelor of Arts. Each honours student must complete a project supervised by a professor by the end of the year.

For my project, I'm wanting to also use people from the community rather than just undergraduate students from the University of Manitoba. Hopefully making my findings easier to generalize to the general population.

Volunteers are greatly appreciated as without volunteers, a lot of research would not be able to be carried out. Much thanks!!

Results of this study will be available by contacting the researcher after the study is complete. Estimated date is May or June 2014.

Messages that are left at the telephone number are checked once a day.

Once you've contacted me, a link to the online survey will be sent to your email address. The survey takes approximately 10 minutes and is completely confidential and anonymous.

first thing you may want to do though is refine your terminology. Poker is a game of skill where the players can use their superior (or inferior as the case may be) knowledge to affect their outcome over time. Gambling implies that you are playing against stacked odds hoping you will get lucky but over a long enough time horizon you will lose all of your money. While some people play poker like it is just an exercise in gambling (usually when in an aggressive state of mind) it is in no way the guess work associated with slots, table games and lotteries.

I know most people who don't play don't immediately see the difference but you will find very few people who are gambling addicts that lose their money playing poker. Even poker players who are addicts tend to lose their proverbial shirts in craps/sports betting etc. (stu Unger etc.)

realizing this difference will ensure you don't shade the results of your research with unintended bias.
