A good option for a Vegas newbie with limited funds is to sightsee every casino that has a signup promotion. You get free bets, clothing, coupon books, etc. When StinkyFingers chose me for the free forum flight to Vegas, we got over $100 worth of free stuff while he got to see all the attractions near each casino. For example, there was a free $25 match play coupon at the Venetian Sports room, then we ate at one of his favourite restaurants there, then we got free expensive drinks at the cash game.
With less than <$800 cash, avoid buying into any US tourney unless you love tourneys and there are no good tourneys available in your area; if you can't resist, confirm first that there there will be no withholding tax even if you win the top prize (I got taxed even though my first-place win was <$5K in the LAST US tourney I bought in). :rage: If you are a casual player, especially avoid the tournaments in the Rio as the world's best tournament players are grinding tournaments there until July.
Since you are in Bally's anyway, avoid the cash games in the WSOP area since the rake policies are worse (e.g., pot is raked even when everybody folds to a raise preflop! :mad2:) and there are a higher proportion of non-WSOP players in the regular Rio poker room and the Strip.
P.S. If you just want to gambool, disregard all the above advice and just have fun!
