As a poker dealer...in sweden. I've been practising pitching, shuffling cards cutting chips etc all that good stuff

Since people seem to get together for some live poker action here every once in a while, play at casinos every once in a while and maybe even have experience working as a dealer or in a cardroom I felt like this was a good place to ask the following

What in your opinion does it take to be a good poker dealer?
What in your opinion should I focus on working a bit harder on to make a casino want to hire me?

and finally what wisdom can you offer me if you've dealt poker proffessionally or semi-proffessionally before?

Well, we know u have great hair, so that's a bonus :)

Having a personable dealer always makes me feel relaxed and comfortable.

Having a good pitch is also important to me, it very noticeable when a dealer hits your hands with the cards

I'd imagine being able to deal different games would be an asset as well

As far as being a good dealer goes in a casino, I'd agree with a lot of what Costanza said. Personality does go a long way, for the average player/tourist/etc. I'm sure more advanced players couldn't care less and want efficient, proficient, knowledgeable, confident dealers that are able to address issues as they may come up without hesitation.

I'd also second the idea of being able to deal different games being a huge asset. Poker room managers would probably like to know they can move you around if necessary without concern.

Be professional and engaging. Keep the game moving but not to the point of being a total ass. Don't take things personally, players say the worst things to dealers.

Look at the player whose action is next, and state their options (its $200 to you), etc...

Learn the regulars and call them by name while at the table. Regulars pay your salary.

Most (casino) poker dealers have to spend a min. of 6 mos learning all the other table games, and dealing them, first.

But yeah, speed and accuracy are a big factor. If the dealer is personable as well, it can loosen up an otherwise tight game...gets people chatting and enjoying themselves..makes people feel comfortable.

well, so far I've learned pitching, shuffling cutting chips tray management, proceedures for handling cash clearing you hands and a decent chunk of roulette multipliers in little under 48 hours so I feel like I could do this ^^'

From talking to some of the dealers here in BC, it is a seniority thing to get to the poker tables...you have to take your lumps dealing blackjack to drunks.. ;)
