chips for cash game

all I will say to finish is get a quality set. I started with dice chips, then went to slugged composites (still basically plastic with like .5% clay in it lol) then to ceramics and then to china clays then to used casino paulson and now to full custom real inlay clays from ASM. It all depends completely on your level of passion for chips. some are happy with bottom end chips and some want the best for addiction/collectors purposes. I didnt think I would ever be addicted to chips but here I am 5 months later and $1200 to $1400 shorter in the wallet

its your call, just think about how much you like chips then go decide then if you want cheap or cream della crem. may be more costly to get cheapos then want to upgrade a bit later.

i was just kind of playing around with the above numbers and i wanted to ask what others thought of the following breakdowns:

8 players - $10 buy-in - $0.10-$0.10 blinds:
each player would get:
20 $0.05 = $1.00 (160 chips)
12 $0.25 = $3.00 (96 chips)
6 $1.00 = $6.00 (48 chips)

8 players - $20 buy-in - $0.25-$0.25 blinds:
each player would get:
12 $0.25 = $3.00 (96 chips)
12 $1.00 = $12.00 (96 chips)
1 $5.00 = $5.00 (8 chips)

i think for the blinds that i'm most likely using, it seems i will probably need more of the .25 chips (maybe 150 0r 200 of those instead).

Nickels are kind of a pain but I understand also the desire for small stakes. I don't think anyone would ever bet more than 5 nickels at a time when they could use a quarter instead.

For the low stakes game I would use something like:
10 .05
10 .25
7 $1

Then you could get a rack each and have just enough for a 10 player game, and in an eight player game you could put the remaining 20 .05/.25 in play on rebuys.

In a .25/.25 game it would be pretty rare for someone to open raise to .75, more likely they would go straight to an even $1, so again usually for those stakes I give out 8 .25 each and put extras in play on rebuys, though 12 as you have suggested is also common. But anyways at those stakes, your $1 chip is the workhorse, and bets will rarely get above $10 unless someone is shoving allin anyways so your breakdown is fine. Except I wouldn't put $5s on the table until you run out of smaller denoms. If you get 10 players you could still use:
8 .25
18 $1

and therefore a rack of .25 and two racks of $1 will still do.

So anyways at your stakes bare minimum you could use:
100 .05/$5
100 $.25
200 $1

If you run out of chips you could let cash play on the table ($20s only) or add 50 $25/$20 chips or add another rack of $5.

If you go with the denominated Pharoahs/Dunes/DPs from the chiproom then the denoms limit your ability to change around the chip values but of course, denominated chips are also a little bit nicer and avoid the endless questions about how much each chip is worth. Of course, having to buy more chips so that you have both nickels and fivers in your set, from the point of view of a chip guy, is not necessarily a bad thing either. :)

if i do end up buying new chips (which probably won't be right now, maybe over the summer some time), i'm most likely going to get ones with denoms since the set i have now does not have them.

They are fairly popular, similar manufacturing as the compression China clays from the chiproom.

The 5k and 10k are rather close in colour though.

Thanks, I also saw that issue. I don't want them for tournaments, just for micro cash game. This is what I was thinking to support 25c/25c up to $1/$2:

A set of 500:

100 25c
200 $1
150 $5
25 $25
25 $100

Or similar, this way I'd have 1) enough 25c for blinds (10 per person should be enough), 2) lots of workhorse chips ($1 for micro, $5 for small) 3) big enough total ($4,045).

I knew I could count on the poker chip degens to answer a question on a Sunday afternoon lol.

three years later, still haven't bought chips lol. but i'm here again looking into it as i'm probably going to start building my own table very soon.

so the plan (now) is to get a set for a $0.25-$0.25 cash game. i can probably only accommodate for 8 people (hell, i probably will never get up to 8 people lol) and i figure that i'll only need around 600 chips to do so.

here's the breakdown i'm thinking of using:

$0.25 chip - 300
$1 chip - 200
$5 chip - 100
600 chips total

is this enough?

breakdown for buy-ins:

$20 (min. buy-in): one $5, eleven $1, sixteen $0.25
x eight players = 8 $5 chips, 88 $1 chips, 128 $0.25 chips total

$40 (max. buy-in): five $5, eleven $1, sixteen $0.25
x eight players = 40 $5 chips, 88 $1 chips, 128 $0.25 chips total

and just in case i can squeeze in ten at max buy-in:

$40 (max buy-in) x ten players = 50 $5 chips, 111 $1 chips, 160 $0.25 chips

i think that gives me enough space for rebuys and top ups. are these good?

Really moose? Everything I read says more low chips. I could probably be okay with 200 $0.25 but 100 seems pretty low.

EDIT: for example, even if i go 12 quarters and 12 $1s, that's 96 quarters i need for 8 people and can't even do 10 players. i could maybe go 150 at the lowest.

although i think you are mostly right. i don't think i need 300 quarters. i'll probably get 200 for 500 chips total.

also, i think the $40 buy-in breakdown would probably be better with 16 $0.25, 16 $1, and 4 $5

Workhorse chip will be the $1 chip. STD raise will be to $1. More than a rack on the table and everyone will have nice pretty stack of quarters that never get in play. I always start with 8 each and then get the rest of the rack in with the rebuys. It's plenty. Another rack of $1s or 5s will give you more value. I use a dealer that works for tips so a lot of quarters go in his tray and a rack is still plenty.

in a 600 chip set I think moose is right, 100 quarters is kind of the limit. Still gives you enough to do 12 each in an 8max or 8 each in a 10max, and allows you to go 100x.25, 300x1, and 200x5.

This also means you can get up to $1325 in play - so you are good for .25/.25 $40max all the way up to .50/1.00 $200max with a full table. The breakdown you posted above would work fine for your 40 max but you would never be able to run anything else.

Purchased a poker table today! Oval, seats ten. Just has folding legs but that's probably better for convenience.

Yeah I was going to build one but this one was a decent price and pretty close to what I'd be making anyway. Also came with a 500 piece chip set but they obviously aren't great chips.

i didn't take a pic and there isn't one online but the one below is an 8 person table that pretty much looks exactly the same. the one i got seats ten and is 84" whereas this one is 64" i believe.
