Our family is looking into a vacation home in Arizona from Christmas to just after New Years. We have found that we can save over $1200 flying to Vegas and renting a car there as opposed to Phoenix while our location is about half way between. The question I have concerns mileage on the car outside of the state of the rental. We will no doubt be doing most of our driving in Arizona maybe even some in California. I've found on some car rental sites they say "typically" mileage in bordering states of the rental is included. I would like to know "specifically" whether Las Vegas rentals offer border state mileage.

If anyone has any experience and can help it is much appreciated.

I have no input re: rental places, however the drive on I93 from LV to AZ will take you over the new bridge by the Hoover Dam.

Pretty cool.

Yeah, when I was there 15 years ago you could drive right over the dam and we took the tour. It will be very interesting the changes.

Ha ha. Just tried lowballing on Priceline last night. Offered $8 a day for a full size. I can get a full size from Dec 24 to Jan 4 for $260 -$275 and think I can likely do a bit better. Just want to be sure I'm not going to get bitten with the out of state mileage crap. I have a friend that said it happened to him renting in California years ago but I think it involved a Mexican joy ride. :o

Just call a couple of the majors in Vegas. I've used Alamo, Hertz and the above is National.

I can't see why any issue with traveling between states as the is no way they can tell, out of country (ie Mexico) different story. As for insurance, get a rider coverage letter from your insurance co., prior to going just to be safe. That's what I have done.

Was thinking the same thing . . . unless they GPS track the vehicle 24/7, how are they gonna know where you are?

Usually any bordering states are included...I have rented from Phoenix and had no issue with driving to NM CA and NV

never had a problem with renting a car and driving across state lines. Never even heard of this before? as stated, how would they know? I guess they could be pricks and use GPS. If the mileage is reasonable, should not even care.

never rented a car while in Vegas; any preferred car rental company at Vegas airport or are they all off site? getting a rate of $55 + $45 tax for four days which is hard to resist. Can easily spend $100 on taxis while there. Thanks.

where is this rate? I usually just use priceline, which means you get an airport rental.

If it's not an airport rental then be sure to have your passport with you to rent the car (I would assume you have it with you at the airport). First time in life I have needed a passport to rent a car was my last trip to Vegas. After a 20+ min walk down the strip to pick it up at TI I was fkn pissed.

I got the best deal through Hotwire last time. Priceline is dead to me.

I think all the rentals are just off site of the airport. Free shuttle to pick-up right out the front doors.

I have always used Dollar Car Rental from Las Vegas. Even though I have tried the discounters it has been as good or better from Dollars own site. Sign up for the Dollar Express. It's free and you get a preferred line with little to no wait plus the car paperwork is done when you arrive.

When we were last in Vegas, I rented from Alamo.

Everything went great, and we took it all the way to LA for 3 days - no problem or extra charges. We had our choice of a large fleet of vehicles at the airport and dropoff was basically put the car in a lineup, give them the keys, someone takes a glance at it, sign a slip and go.

But you can't control the vendor...I prefer to use certain rental companies, some are too doggy for me. They all do try the liability coverage scam.

Our Hotwire reservation was for Alamo as well. Top notch service and everything was as Al described above. Also note that my Hotwire reservation only saved me about $10 from what was available to me directly from their web-site.....price was great either way.

And there's really no liability scam anymore. They will always ask if you want it, just be knowledgeable. If you pay for it with a credit card you're most likely already covered.
