Wonder if Girardi is related to anyrag_dipscat? :D

The Jays are retiring Robby Alomars' #12.
I thought it was BJs policy to NOT retire numbers, but I guess they will if someone is inducted into the HoF as a Blue Jay.

Was just going to post a thread. Congrats to Alomar....well deserved. Let's hope for many more deserving Jays in the future.
Oh, and BRING UP LAWRIE NOW!!!

He played for the Jays for 5 years. No way.
Carter played 7. Nobody wants to retire his number.
Total joke. HOF'er yes. Greatest Blue Jay ever - not even close.

Funny you say that. When I think of the Jays and #12, I think of Ernie Witt.
Greatest Jay? Dave Stieb? Roy Halladay? Manny Lee?

Halladay played 12. Stieb 15. Hentgen 10 and he is a real coach for the Jays. Whitt 12. Borders 8. Fernandez 12 - he got traded away and came back to the Jays 3 SEPARATE TIMES. Wells 12. Delgado 12. Alomar 5, ridiculous.
You can't unretire a number. It shames the franchise if we ever find a real deserving player to retire. They waited so long and this sets the bar so low we might as well retire about 20 more numbers so it doesn't look so pathetic.

Gotta disagree. Halladay will have his number retired right beside Alomar's as soon as he hangs them up. All the others mentioned give Jays fans a nice fuzzy feeling but in terms of complete talent couldn't hold Alomar's jock. 5 years isn't a long time but the impact he had here was a career's worth.....without him the Jays would still be looking for World Series #1.
moose
Not denying him HOF statistics. Not deserving of retired number unless you had long time service. No player should ever be considered with less than 10 years service unless extenuating circumstances like illness or death. 5 years is a total joke. 5 years is a sneeze, a coffee cup, a thanks for coming out. Less than 1/3 of his career was spent with the Jays. Hey let's consider Molitor. He was awesome. WS MVP. HOF'er. 3000+ hits. Wait, no Clemens - 2 Cy Youngs in two seasons. Amazing. Let's do it.

5 years with the Jays were 2 more than he had anywhere else. What does it matter? What sense does putting an arbitrary number like 10 years on it make? Then it would only be the guys who weren't good enough to jump to the Yanks or Red Sox (or Phillies) when they became free agents that would ever be considered.
I would argue (and it has been by others more knowledgeable than even me) that he was at worst one of the top 3 all time 2Bmen. The fact that he was only a Blue Jay for 5 years (because when he reached free agency the Jays were getting ready to stink it up for a while or "rebuild"......see "be cheap") is no reason to hold his immense talent hostage to being honoured that way. Other than Halladay I don't see anyone in the history of the organization worthy of the honour.....no matter how many years they played.
Comparing the Molitor and Clemens situations to Alomar is just stupid.

Why? It's your argument. Great players, great stats with the Jays. Were here a short period of time. Must qualify by your standards.
Big difference between being a HOF'er and deserving of having your number retired. You don't seem to be able to qualify the difference.
You can't agree that it should be harder to get your number retired than making the HOF? He was here when the team was good. 3 playoff years and less than 5 full seasons. Big deal.

Quick show of hands please!
Who thinks the most storied franchise in Baseball is ridiculous for retiring Reggie Jackson's number? Moose......anybody else?
Retiring numbers is based on a mix of illustrious careers and service to an organization. There are no hard and set rules for it and I won't rail against it if a guy like Dave Stieb is similarly honoured in the future. Nolan Ryan had his number retired by every team he pitched for.....how many of those teams fans are disgusted by it?
moose
4 years of playoffs out of 5 season with the Yankees. 3 World Series, 2 titles, one WS MVP. Also retired by Oakland for which he played 9 seasons.
Please keep looking for a selection weaker than Alomar.
Hellmuth's Mole
Nah, whatever nonsensical reasons you want to hold on to, just keep holding on.
moose
Well when you name Alomar as one of the top 3 second basemen of all time, your judgement is obviously clouded by homerism.
Carew, Morgan, Robinson, Hornsby, Ryno without even trying too hard and I'm pretty sure their numbers are all retired. Cano will be smashing all in a few years.
djgolfcan
Seems Mosse thinks that longevity with a team is the requirement for retiring their number. While that is true in most cases, this is the first hall of famer going in as a Blue Jay (If I am wrong about this, I am sure someone will let me know).
As such, the team wanted to honour their first hall of famer a little different than just their "wall of fame".

Just wondering how drunk Buck Martinez is getting for the telecasts lately?
Two nights ago, called the right fielder Eric Snider or Travis Thames, forget which.
Last night: "There's a drive, over the w...[2 second pause while tries to save his ass]...left fielder's head."
Today. Bautista drives in Thames, then inexplicably on the very next play, has Thames advancing to third, when it was actually Bautista. WTF?
Serious, can we recommend Pat Tabler for an Emmy or something - how he continues on without bursting into laughter after Martinez's mistakes as if nothing happened, is beyond me.
I think Buck must be drinking with whomever puts up the count and outs and player positions on the screen for the telecasts. It's wrong SO many times. I mean seriously dude, please just look at the scoreboard and get it right.

I heard the Jays were going to play texas tonight on sportsnet. The only game i got was the las vegas 51 vs texas. I wish the jays would have shown up.

I'm a casual fan but...
Alomar deserves the HOF and the retired #....
He is clearly one of the position's best, I haven't, but google Alomar's greatest plays, and i guarantee there's a video out there. He's the first player to get into Cooperstown with a TBJ jersey, and that's reason enough.

Alomar's best stat years may have been with other teams but, when he was with the Jays, he was the best player on the roster. During his career, he was the best at his position. I am not even a casual baseball fan anymore, but a few images stand out when I think of the Jays:
Alomar just leaving the box in Oakland, arms raised, after he stroked that homer to get the Jays back in the game/series. Single-handedly destroyed the myth of Eckersley as a dominant reliever.
The Carter home run, obv., and the bunt in Atlanta . . .
but Alomar was the best of them all, and deserves to be in the Hall, and deserves the honour of having his # retired.
