Strategy for Casino play

what general advice can you offer to a guy sitting down at the 1/2 tables in a casino, I dont play very often and I'm looking for some general advice that I can keep in mind...

I would appreciate ant tips you might want to give.

**background**
so I rarely get a chance to go the the city and play some cards, as luck would have it I can go next week (Halifax).

I have not been in about a year now and my previous visits were ...interesting.

On my last trip I played pretty good - very lucky to have some fish sit down at my table and I took some money from them, I also played a solid game and built my buyin of $160 to $550 over 5 hours. The last hour I was really card dead and was just about to pack up when I was dealt KK on the button. I played it hard and decided my opponent ( a guy who was a really good player) had a lower pocket pair with a straight draw .. well it turned out he had AA and took all my chips.
I know all my chips should never have been in there but I was super tired and played well beyond my capability. wasn't thinking straight.

This time I wont have that issue because I will be rested and don't have to drive up there that day.

Previous visits have yielded small wins and losses nothing to write home about.

  • Don't play tired. Don't drink. Play connected cards IN POSITION.. If the table doesn't feel good, change tables..

  • No worries there I wont be tired or drink. Im wondering how to play suited connectors in position. lets say I get 9/10suited on the button 2 limpers then the guy behind me makes it $7... what then.. I would call most of the time

Well you can mix it up, but wouldn't it be better to be the raiser, then you can win by either making the best hand or convincing any caller you have a big hand.... If you are playing a hand, raise it.. Otherwise fold.

<<<< doesn't always follw his own advice..:-[
  • Don't move out west to play 1/2 and you'll be fine
  • post some hands after you play, that will probably be the most helpful for you

and I'm sure he would say fine but if i come over the top you GTFO .
but what little nuggets do you have to help ?
  • honestly, just play basic ABC poker. play tight agressive. look to play good drawing hands in position, and when you hit a flop hard, bet it hard. idiots will call you down.

See above. If you don't get there often, regs are going to pick up on that pretty quick and eat you alive.

Stay calm. If you don't get there often, it's an exciting experience. You don't want that to show in your face, actions, behaviours. Don't get too excited, frustrated, nervously chat it up with everyone, etc.
  • ABC Poker should win the day at the 1/2 level. Fold lots and play aggressive when you hit your hands. Don't play those middling hands - they will get you in the most trouble. Also, don't over play TP TK....one pair is okay, but if your raises are getting called, slow down a bit (think small ball). Position is key. And as for JJ - tread carefully...GL!
  • Order of operation : Raise/Fold/Call, Fold/Raise/Call

    - ALWAYS play a pair if your stack and your opponents are at least 10x the pre-flop raise
    - don't play too many hands
    - TPTK no good in a cash game
    - careful who you try to bluff; hard to get players off draws or middle pair at 1/2. As noted, play your made hands aggressively (don't slow play to get rivered)
  • Really great advice -exactly what I was looking for

    REally? why so?

    no reason.

on a completely different note, you are invited to all my cash games in the future.

    EDIT: >:D:D
  • Top pair is top pair. If you bet the right amount so that drawing hands can't justify calling. I guess stack sizes can be a factor. Regardless of betting TPTK will win more often then drawing hands. No?
  • Top pair is good, I like top pair. Top pair gets too much hate from people who likes to talk cashgame strat
  • Ok so lets say Im in position over 2 callers I have A10 suited hearts
    the board is 10s8s6h
    Limper one checks
    limper two checks
    I bet 1/2 pot
    Limper 1 folds
    Limper 2 triples my bet
what to do ?? is he forcing an obvious newbie off a cbet, is he trapping ? what would you do with no other obvious information
  • yavvy... dont try and get to savvy ...
  • perm facepalm..

also if you must edit your post for spelling reasons (and I dont think you should) fix them all.
  • why don't you just play good poker? kind of applies no matter how often you go and play

sounds awesome.... I should start a thread asking for some quick helpful tips, to get me started on the road to good poker (besides reading the stickies and older posts which I am) . I imagine some knuckle dragging posters would mumble "post hands - then help"... and I, (lol) would retort "why dont'cha try and give advice pre-hindsight?" they would no doubt give some other blankey non-answer. lol. Humans these days ???.

I should have posted this in the strategy section and not analyse my hand section. What a tit I am.
  • How about this? Of course, due to the variance of a single session results cannot be guaranteed:)

Also, not taking advice from those uprooting their lives to play 1/2 when it is readily available locally is probably also some sound advice

If you have intentions of going pro or simply enjoy a good protein shake then this may be useful:

If you have specific questions about what hands to play, how deep to buy in, about a specific venue, etc then post away

How about starting by posting the min/max, your bankroll for the night and other structure details of the games you intend to play (9 handed 10 handed, etc)

That my friend is #fuckingawesome thanks for the link - am reading now.
also out to my home game tonight, I'm going to #crush the shit out of that too.
  • stay #yavvy and not #savvy

    glgl at home game
  • GL, post some hands after your session. Even if you win a huge pot it doesn't mean that you played the hand optimally. Try and remember the details of any big hand, win or lose, and post them for some advice/opinions.

Eh so I have $200 to spend, I haven't decided if I should buyin $100 or $200 and have the option to top up or not.
I guess Im playing whatever NLHE is available, Im not ready for PLO too new to it. I think the only game is going to be 9 player 1/2 no limit.

If you only have $200 to take a shot at 1/2 then I wouldn't really follow the advice in my other thread...that is more of a LAG style that increases long-term profits but also greatly increases short-term variance.

With $200 to work with I may actually recommend buying in very short ($50) and playing all in or fold preflop until you double once then adjusting, but it depends on your intentions in the game.

Are you just playing for fun? Are you going to be very upset about losing $200? How does the game play (you have been there before, correct?) -- is it generally 7 people limping in preflop or is there usually a raise and a few callers preflop, a raise and 7 callers preflop?
