A final table with SirWatts

I like reading stories about big scores and close misses, so here's mine from last night, hopefully you'll enjoy it.
This is probably gonna get long because it's really late and I'll probably get to rambling. 109 NL on Stars. OK first the random luckiness that leads to all final tables.

Crap, I thought I could get away if this happened but doing math in your head as you enter a raise at 3:30 am mistakes can happen. He doesn't need much to do this, I"m pot committed. I should either raise less so I can actually fold to a reraise or just push and hope no one has the nerve or hand to call.

This was a very loose call, I would normally fold here. The table had been somehwat recjkess and I thought my hand was good this time. OK on to the final table as promised. First key hand.

a smallish raise, i don't want to overcommit, I'm hoping to take the pot down on the flop with a continuation bet when he calls. Maybe overlimping is better but I really didn't think his limp meant true strength.

He really did limp a (fairly) strong hand, I got lucky here. All of a sudden I'm the chip leader.

Now things get crazy. When we get down to 5 handed people start proposing a chop, At one point I have 100K and am 20-30K ahead of the other 4 (who are pretty even). A chop by chip count here would have to be +EV, since my extra chips will probably get me a few hundred extra if we chop by count, but they really aren't a big advantage in the tournament. Everyone seems to be in for it, but I decline. I hadn't even really looked at the numbers,. I try not to look at payouts because you can't play scared, i just concentrate on playing, and playing to win, though I knew what I just mentioned (the +EV thing), and I knew the deal would net me over 4K. That's a LOT of money for me. But I wanted to play. Not because I wanted the 7K for first, or because I thought I was a far stronger player, I JUST WANTED TO WIN. No more 3rds or 4ths. No more coming close and failing. So on we go.

snauds is on a terribly shortstack, i could prboably fold and wait him out with ease to move up a spot. The player who reraised me actually seemed fairly solid, but the aggression level at the table (both mine and everyone else's) is way too high to fold a hand this big i think.

I made 1600 for my trouble, that's signifcantly less than 4500 by the way. I think I'm supposed to care, but I really don't, even now after the fact. I played great Dammit now I just sound like Matusow doing post WSOP interviews. Anyways that's my story, I think I've come down from the rush enough to go to sleep now. Comments on all hands are welcome and appreciated as always. Call me a lucky donkey or whatever. Still got a bit of time before school starts to get my first big NL MTT win. (I have a limit holdem win and a stud H/L win somehow?) . Making up for that 3 grand would be ok too.

On another note:
Harthgosh: Sorry I couldn't bust JJ for you guys in the 109 PL Holdem earlier today, I misplayed a hand and the other guy ended up making a pretty nice call on me.

  • Congrats, thats still a good payday where I come from.

You should've shown some hands where you folded, b/c it seems like you were calling everything ;)

I know these final tables get crazy with the escalating blinds, and most of the betting is done preflop - which I believe is a shame. I mean, you're at a final table, and this should be a chance to display your poker skills, not working on clicking the all in button.
For this particular reason, I'm in favour of taking a deal. If you want the 'win', leave 1k on the table or something. Everybody gets paid, and there is still something worth playing for.

On another note: I busted JJ twice this week for you HG ;)
  • Hey congrats on the finish. I may not call ImSoLucky a donk tho, guy is a beast. Came 4/5? in PP Million for 50K and makes crazy cashes left and right. But a gift nonetheless. GL on your next tourneys!
  • hey.

Busting JJ isnt an issue. Its giga we want to lose lose lose.

Ah I see. I think that hand was onthe bubble and he was just trying to make sure no one could play back at him figuring they probably wouldn't call off their chips without a monster. Still pretty reckless though.

True, I was doing a lot of that for a change. This was the WPT style replay of my tournament. I don't think I made any huge laydowns on the way, just a lot of steal attempts getting picked off with a reraise, or semi-legitimate raises with mediocre hands like AT/AJ getting popped all-in and having to fold. I might be forgetting some nice hands because it was kind of late. Normally I would probably fold the AQ vs QQ hand and KQ vs TT hand most of the time, and it's hard to argue against that being the right play in both cases (I really should have limped the KQ preflop, but I hate letting the blinds in, and I really felt he was making a move with a small-middle pair when he came over the top, and folding seemed like it weas gving up too much given the pot odds).

He gave up on the 29th I think? Said it was pretty much out of reach...
  • itll all make sense on the first :)
