2018 wsop

The schedule's been out for awhile so I'm surprised no one has started a thread. I've tentatively booked Paris for 9 nights at an average of $135.50/night all in (including "resort fee"). The hotel is dependent on whether or not the little lady accompanies me this year. Usually she comes down for the first 3 or 4 days and then leaves me for the Senior Smorgasbord but she's not sure she wants to go this year. The reason (don't laugh) is because we'll be in Vegas for ten days in April to watch curling! We're both ex-curlers and big fans so we thought we'd take in the Men's Worlds in Vegas this year.

Usually I rent a car but with all the parking charges now I'm planning to use Uber and Lyft to get around when walking doesn't work. Haven't booked flights yet (need to wait for the better half to make a decision) but that should happen soon. Same plan as in past years - play the senior tournaments at Wynn, Venetian and Aria. Probably play WSOP Senior (still don't care for the structure but having cashed in 2 of the last 3 years it's kind of hard not to play it). I might give some consideration to the Super Senior in future years (being over 60 now) but not this year.

Anyone else heading down for Old Fogeys' Week?

Comments

  • Uber/Lyft is the way to go. Last summer was the first trip in a very long time I didn't rent a car, and that's the route I'm most likely taking for the foreseeable future.
  • Hopefully going back this year. Went last, rented a car and stayed at TI. great low cost option w free parking and great proximity to the rio.
  • I see the WSOP Senior structure has improved a bit this year. They've removed the antes from levels 3 & 4 so no antes until level 5. The Patience Factor has increased from 21.43 last year to 29.51 this year. Compared to other PF's for last year's tourneys it's much closer now to the V's Senior (34.70) and the Wynn's (36.70) and now much better than Aria's Senior last year (23.07).
  • Lots of discussion on 2+2 about BB antes. Apparently a number of non-WSOP tournaments will be run utilizing this "new" concept. Anybody have any experience/views on this? I've never played a tournament with this structure so I'm interested in understanding the intricacies of playing with a BB ante. Does it change one's strategy at different points in a tournament? Any particular pluses/minuses vs. the normal ante structure?
  • It makes the game so much smoother in general. As for strategy, it affects shorts stacks more than anything. your jamming range ep should be much wider since you will lose a big % of your short stack paying ante,bb, and sb in the next 2 hands.
  • Sitting in the Sands Conventian Center (Venetian) waiting for the start of Day 1A of the $600 NLHE MSPT. Arrived in Vegas late last night in time to hit the sack. Go me!

Plan to play at the Wynn tomorrow and Monday (Seniors). Hopefully returning to the V on Tuesday for day 2 of the MSPT 😜

Was looking for an update from gogie.... But congrats to your friends cousins mothers hairdressers son on his 2nd place win.
  • Oooops typo
  • Sorry for not updating earlier. I didn’t have as much success as in past years but I did manage to cash twice. I finished 149 out of 1503 in the Venetian Senior event (first time I managed to even make day two in this tournament) and 744 out of 5919 in the WSOP Senior (3rd time in 4 years l’ve cashed in this one).

A couple of notable hands from the WSOP:

2nd last hand before first break (blinds 50-100). I’m dealt Ac5c in late position and there’s one limper to me. I decide to limp and there’s another limp behind me and the BB checks. A87 rainbow flop with one club. Check, I bet 350, fold, BB raises to 1000, fold and I call. Turn 6x. I check and V checks. River 9 giving me ignorant end of straight. I check and V shoves for about half my remaining stack (leaving me with about 3000 if I call and lose). I think for awhile and can’t see how he could have a T the way he played the hand so I call. He shows pocket 7’s for flopped set and I scoop a big pot!

Probably my favourite hand of the tournament: Level 3 with blinds at 75-150. I’m dealt 64os in SB. Two limpers in front so I complete and BB checks (I was getting odds to call and I’d been running good). Flop comes 235 rainbow! I check BB bets 500 everyone else folds and I call. Turn a brick. BB bets 1000, I raise to 2200 and he shoves. I insta call and he shows A4 for the wrong end of the straight. River a brick and I scoop around 12K pot.

One more hand. You know you’re running good when: Level 6 (150-300, 50). I get JJ UTG. I raise to 800 and button calls. Flop comes KKQ. I bet 1200 to see where I am and V shoves for 1400 more. I know I’m beat but I’m priced in to call and toss in 1400 more. He shows AQ. T on the turn and 9 on the river and I suck out. 😄 Given V’s stack size I probably should have either checked the flop or shoved since my bet meant I was pot commited anyway.

    Yes I know. **rolls eyes**

    Congrats. 2 cashes is great.

i love the 64os hand..... they can never put you that.
  • Thanks for being rude though. Don't be mad cause you can't win anymore and live poker is done here in Ontario in the next year.

All you have to do is go to wsop.com and look for "Gogie" in the standings and most likely see him in top 10? :P

Dont see see how I was rude to Brian AKA Gogie. Cashing 2 times when only played maybe 3 tournaments is amazing.

If if you have ever played with me I often have the 5 3 off or the ugly 6 4 off and I don’t see how that was rude either.

As for your other comments.... I will have a good laugh at them. I have always been a losing player.....nothing new there, never claimed to be a winning player. I have had huge wins and have had even bigger losses..... I play the game because I enjoy it .

    have a nice day.

Don't worry Mike, I'm sure Brian wouldn't take it that way, it's just Philli being Philli. He stopped posting for a long time because some of his comments aroused the ire of several long time members.. He's harmless though...;)
  • Whoa Comp lay off the Viagra and the arousal stories.
  • I certainly didn't take any of Toronto Pimp's comments negatively. In fact I was a little confused by philliivey's post. By the way philli, I'm pretty sure you won't ever see me in the top 10 for the WSOP standings (I wish). I'm more like Pimp - I play the game because I enjoy it and once in awhile I'll post some of my experiences here because I know some on this board like to live vicariously once in awhile (including me).

    Thank you Sir.

I hope to cash even once on this trip and we will be playing much smaller and softer fields that you played.
