Traveling to play poker

Recently a poker club of mine that I used to regularly visit sent some of its members to Montreal to play in a couple events at the World Cup of Cards... the one they played today seemed kind of silly, with eight day 1s on a $200 buy in or something lol.

But I think the idea is cool, it would be nice to just have sort of a mini getaway and play a tournament or two even though I don't really like tourneys all that much so it is something I am now potentially considering doing in the Spring or maybe even soon as this fall if something really good comes up. I have had a friend go play in a couple wsopc events, it came to Vancouver one year and had great numbers and success but they never came back which was odd

But what is out there? I know there is usually a series of tournaments in vegas every other day i'm not opposed to Vegas but would like to try somewhere new, LA? I've heard good things about Calgary with their casinos.

It would have to be kept to a North American thing right now, so no talk about a PCA or Monte Carlo yet :p

  • Well Fallsview runs an annual WPT festival and playground seemingly runs a festival of some sort every other month.

The problem w Vegas and LA, is the tax implications. 30% withholding on large cashes in Vegas and I believe even more in LA.

If value hunting, the best games to play will always be in our backyard.

And nothing else is even close for value. Lot's of cash games for you as well if that's what you prefer.
  • Playground is good as compuease says. They are running their world cup of cards tournament series until second week of Sept

I've been lucky and gone to a few places this year, I enjoy seeing the city that I'm in on top of just spending the whole day inside the poker room.
  • Damn sounds like bad timing as I can't make it out there for this years event, do they have any other real big name series?

I understand the tax reasons and they suck but I would be able to claim most of that money back in that case would I not? I would totally be down for Montreal but damn domestic Canada flights are expensive.
  • Yeah - sometimes I feel like for the cost of domestic flights, you might as well fly and play in Europe and be a tourist while you're at it.

Playground usually run a big series every quarter, next one will probably be around Nov with the WPT.

Yeah no kidding, i'm not the most savy when it comes to flying (besides the 50-60 dollar flights to Vegas from Bellingham) but I saw a deal today that I could fly to Singapore and Japan roundtrip from Vancouver for 650.

For fun I checked out a flight and hotel to Montreal (where if I booked the hotel the flight was pretty much free) for a week that was $700...
  • Yeah, I know. Even from Toronto I can get flight + hotel to Vegas for almost same price as driving to Mtl and getting a decent hotel.
  • Looking at what's coming up, Prague for PokerStars Championship would be a fun spot. I've heard GREAT things about the city and they'll have a wide variety of tournament offerings.

A tour across Europe is on my bucket list for sure but that won't be for a little bit and won't exactly be for Poker... though I'd love to play some in Monaco

This Grand Prix with $1 Million Gtd and other Playground tournaments are probably the best events in the WORLD for Canadians to take shots in. Not enough players were willing to play online and/or travel to Montreal, so there was a big overlay. A player who has only one lifetime cash took the $220 shot and won the $200,000 TAX-FREE first place prize! A female player whom I have seen regularly in local tournaments but have never seen cash, made the trip to PG and won $125,000. PocketsTwos won $35K in this event last year, also with an overlay.

DirtArse and I have found combining travel and a tax-free festival to be the best. This is my ranking of the countries we've traveled to: Dominican Republic, Philippines, Panama, UK, Germany, Korea, Netherlands, Ireland, Georgia; US is last with the 30%-37% unbeatable taxes. DirtArse also traveled to Cambodia, and won two WPT trophies!

The cash games have higher rake than in North America, so we go sightseeing instead when we're done with each tournament. If you live in Edmonton and are interested in Calgary, I would recommend the upcoming WPT DeepStacks Battle of Alberta Calgary at Grey Eagle Casino.

Very informative thank you, I currently live in Vancouver but a flight to Calgary wouldn't be so bad (I still don't get why domestic flights so expensive) I will look up more info on this event.

By the sounds of it you don't enjoy playing in the States? Are there ever times when it is worth it to play? I've only been to Vegas a bit but with the high traffic of Canadian tourists you always see the ads about getting your money back when you file, what is that about?
