3 handed in BB with weak-ish holdings

how would you play this hand? effective stacks are 140BBs. if i had to label SB villain i'd say he's been playing LAGish. CO villain just sat down like 5 hands ago.

i felt it was connected enough that it was playable out of position, but perhaps it wasn't (it is a rainbow after all and i'm up against two opponents). i feel like because it was only 4 handed i was more inclined to make the preflop call. btw, this is 8 game again.

on flop, i have middle pair (which can improve to two pair or trips) and an open ended straight draw, but the Q kills my action from any Js. i have to be worried about the club flushes also. flop is probably an easy fold i think.

  • I am by no means a PLO specialist. However, your hand gets dominated by higher straights too often. You only have 3 clean outs to the nuts (6s-6h-6d). Any club, any Jack and you are likely dominated.

I don't like playing these middle card (6, 7, 8, 9, T), they are rarely the nuts and put you in a tough spot.

i don't mind playing these hands when i'm in position at least, but i think i was just getting too overzealous here maybe.
  • Pf is fine. Not a great starter but not terrible either. No need to continue with this hand post flop. You could be good but really???

Contrary to DJ, those kind of starting hands are AWESOME but mostly the ones with the gap at the bottom.

    P.S. u know...
  • The call pre is fine as you close the action then an easy fold on the flop as you are now being led thru by the SB for a 1/3 pot bet. This can often be a small bet into the raiser to build a pot and trap you if you decide to call. Plus you could already be up against 9-J-x-x for the flopped nuts.
  • Likely folding even if it was rainbow but the clubs on the flop make it a snap fold.

For sake of discussion, what if you had two middle clubs to go with it, say Tc 5c 7x 9x?

I ask because those type of spots I still need work on. Seems like a mistake to fold w/ that much equity, yet a real shitty spot when you hit your "draw" and the guy doesn't slow down.

Call pre if you have a good read on opponents' tendencies on later streets, fold pre otherwise.

Same with flop. You are not drawing to the nuts, but you are 3 handed and can represent some hands vs the right opponents. If you are just c/calling to hit with no other plans then just fold every time.

When I started playing online PLO 6max again a few days ago my biggest leak was playing marginal/bad hands out of position. If you make 1 (2?) change(s) to your game I would recommend not playing less than 5 handed for now and folding marginal/bad hands that are raised OOP (blinds) and folding them UTG and UTG+1 as well.

Thus, don't limp in UTG with 4556ds and don't call a raise HU in BB with AT76 single suited ace, etc, etc.

Preflop, fold if not ds with the considerations I made above re: opponents. No offense, but you also have to take into account skill level when playing marginal hands. If I am playing a good player OOP I will fold a large range of hands that I will call or 3bet vs. other opponents.

Flop, bet out and represent a variety of hands on later streets when they hit...of course, read your opponents' reactions to your bets.

There is no one correct answer, it depends on you opponents and table dynamics, etc. 3 handed your cards don't even matter some of the time...but it's nice to have a hand for showdown now and then.

As stated above, I see that most players' biggest leaks are not using position properly in PLO.

This for sure, there are so many variables but absolutley 3 handed it cant just be about showdowns. Short handed PLO has always been a weak spot for me, i think your advice to generally avoid it is the right move for now.

Playing 3 handed PLO correctly is super high variance...I don't even bother with it anymore. 5-6 handed is variance enough for me.

If I want to play 3-4 handed I'll usually drop down a limit unless a table gets short vs terrible players.
