Help me buy a new Razor

I've been using the Mach III and I am looking for something new. I am not a fan of electric ones as I find they don't give me a smooth/clean cut. Possibly the one I bought was inexpensive at $149.99, so that could have been the problem.

They keep advertising newer razors and thought I would ask for opinions.

What do you like to use and would you recommend it?

  • beard FTW!!!
  • I've already grown my winter beard back in. Fuck shaving. But when I do shave it's with a Gillette Fusion (non-powered).
  • I don't shave often but when I do...
Fusion is good. Got a few free ones over the years.
Fusion power is good and expensive. Got a cheap one from Amazon.
Dorco 6 blade is good and cheap. Takes a few weeks for delivery.
Braun 700 series is good and expensive. Catch it on sale.

Dorco is probably best performance /price ratio. $40 will probably cover you for 2+ years if you take care of the blades.

Great topic for a poker forum. I'm not sure anyone shaves here, either.
  • I've never liked electric razors. I researched it again a couple years ago and bought the highest rated wet/dry razor...used it twice and now it's in a drawer somewhere. I only shave roughly once a week so that may be why I never find electric razors work that well for me.

ca.dollarshaveclub.com sounds decent since I buy lots of stuff online but not that cheap in Canada.

I currently use a Mach 3...I find that this

    shaving creams are great

  • Thanks guys for all the responses so far. I was considering the Gillette Fusion. Who would have though a thread regarding razors would have more responses then some of the hh posted on the forum.
  • Hairy middle-eastern people have to shave everyday :( feel my pain
  • Guys get hosed for razors like ladies get hosed at the hairdresser/drycleaner.

$5+ for a razor cartridge is fucking stupid.

  • If you want a truly close shave you need to ditch the 12 blade razors (or whatever # they are up to. Just get an old fashioned safety razor with the double sided blades. Nothing will shave you as close, except a straight razor. It will take a little bit of time to get proficient with one, but the blades last longer, and the shave is better once you do. I use a Fusion for every day shaves, but when I want to look nice, I use the od fashioned . . . want to buy a straight razor and learn how to wield it, though.

Love going to "my" shop for a hot towel shave. I get the top and bottom shaved for $30.00 including tip. It's a helluva deal. Sadly, shops in this Province are no longer allowed to used straight razors for sanitary reasons.
  • in before old guy says straight razor

Bottom shaved.... I'd hope the tip was pretty good.

Seriously though. Who needs a freaking shave close enough for a straight razor? That's insane. Who the hell is even going to notice.

Pretty sure we have a greater surface area to shave regularly, and women's razors cost more than men's...and work half as well. Seriously, $1.50 more because it is pink?!?! No deal.
  • There's no way I am putting a single blade razor on my raison sack.

no future porn star roles for you then i guess.
  • You misunderstand... I use a multiblade in that region for safety.

If you have to shave daily for work, then...ewww or er...congrats?

  • I have never once, in my life, had visible leg hair.
Women who wait to find out, or :shudder: do the whole "winter hibernation" thing, are doing it wrong...and making me queasy.

So, yeah...pretty sure I still win this.

Top and bottom refers to scalp and jaw, obv.

As for close shaves, try being in uniform with a prick of a Sargeant doing inspection. You learn to keep a single blade Bic on you at all times.

And, having a wife and daughter under the roof, Kristy is correct. When it comes to personal care products, women get boned on the regular. The wife and I share a razor brand because the "mens" version is cheaper, though identical in every way.

This is more or less everything I would say on the subject.

I invested about sixty bucks a few years back in a Merkur safety razor, a badger brush, a steel bowl, and a tube of Prorasso. I buy blades from Amazon, usually about ten bucks for twenty five of them. A tube of shave cream lasts me six months or more. It's easily the best shave I've ever had. I enjoy the process, and I'm spending way less.

If you totally have to go the disposable route.

Shaving supply company from the same dudes who started Warby Parker. Solid prices, handsome looking razors. You can even set it up as a subscription to get blades and shave cream sent to you on a regular basis.

Finally, if your shave cream comes in a can, it's all wrong.
  • Hmmm... This has me wanting to try a safety razor. What are the main factors in choosing one? They seem to range in price from $30 to hundreds.

I chose mine based mostly on length of the handle and the price. A lot of them have short handles, and I wanted something a little longer.

This is the exact razor I have.

Turns out it's a Parker and not a Merkur. Who knew I was a liar?

I've been very happy with it, and I don't see any reason why you'd need to spend more than this for a quality product honestly. More important than the razor is the brush in my opinion. Typically, brushes are made of either boars hair or badger. Badger holds much more water and creates a better lather with your soap. It's pretty amazing actually, you can soak the brush and then hold it upside down and nothing will happen. Then if you squeeze the brush water will just pour out of it.

Finally, watch some videos on the old you tube which will help you get used to the razor. The temptation is to pull the razor across your skin. This is wrong!! Instead you have to get used to allowing the weight of the razor to do the work, and also to learn how to take the hair off in short strokes a little at a time.

As mentioned previously, I really enjoy the ritual of it. Usually, I'll fill my bowl with hot water and allow the brush to soak in it right before jumping in the shower with the plan to shave immediately afterward. From there, it's mixing up the soap and proceeding to shave. It's fun, it's manly in a good way. It's also cheaper, and a better shave.

I can't think of any reason not to switch.
  • I already use a badger brush and shaving creams... Will try the razor sometime soon
  • I have been growing the beard and yet to buy a new razor. My face looks like I need miracle grow to fill in the missing patches. The wife isn't liking it. I may have a fusion sooner then later.
    #fearthebeard
  • I am in the same boat with respect to "patchiness". I can grow a 'stache or goatee just fine, but a full beard eludes me.
