Comments

  • Looking forward to the amazing TR as always moose.
  • Grail is at Foxwoods right now, so hopefully there will be some updates from him.

I fly out of Buffalo on Thurs and will meet up with him in Boston before the real attack on the liver begins.
  • Played until 4am last night. Back at er again shortly
  • Coles notes: crushed the cash games for over $1k. Not easy to do in mostly .25/.50 pl games. 2nd in tourney plus 3 bounties for $740. Grail finished 8th in the tourney for no moniez but two bounties I think. He did less well in cash games but overall up up.

Drank a ton of good beer and had a lot of good eats. Still up and wired on 4 hours sleep.

Will post shitty cell phone pics later for those who didn't check twitter feed.
  • ok so Thurs I packed up and drove to Buffalo to catch my flight to Boston for BBotB4. I left a little late so there was some early stress but I did manage to make it to the gate about 5 minutes before they started boarding, so all good.

The flight into Boston was quick and met up with STG no problem and we started the drive north to Dover. Coming out of the tunnel under the harbour we make a wrong turn but I recognized the street from my trip to Boston last summer - hey the Harpoon brewery is on this street!

Super rungood already! So we grab some ales for ourselves and a case for the hosts and get back on the right path to Dover.

We check in, grab some dinner and get to Chicken Robs for about 6:30. There is enough to break into two tables so we start the 3/6 mixed game. We change the games around a bit throughout the night but no-one is particularly happy with the mix and after about 5 hours we completely switch to a .25/.50 mix PL game. Generally over the entire weekend with usually play some mix of 234 or 345 or 3456, holdem, crazy pineapple, plo, plo8, bigo, bigo8, TAHOE and SOHE. Grail and I were used to all of the games except TAHOE, which is played 5 card Omaha high. It has a deadly wrinkle though - you can either play exactly 2 cards or all 5 if you get dealt a pat hand. It led to some massive pots and huge swings if you happened to crash into a pat hand.

Short dinner break in the 3/6 game.

    IMG_20140320_195004.jpg

A really incredible beer. I managed to find 12 in the Buffalo Walmart on the way home. Sweet!

    IMG_20140320_202418.jpg

    On to the mixed game.

    IMG_20140320_233944.jpg

So as I said, with no experience in TAHOE, Grail and I get into a funny hand where I get dealt 8, 9, 10, J, Q. I flop what I think is a decent draw at a straight but I miss the turn and then it gets checked down on the river. Grail rolls a wheel and I prepare to muck but luckily I turn my hand over and contemplate what might have been. They start to ship the pot to Grail when I remember the 5 card rule and call my pat straight for the win. Grail razzes me a bit for slow rolling him. :) I berate him for checking it down when if he had bet, it never would have gone to showdown. Always show your hands kiddos!

We play on until about 3:30 am and head back to the hotel. Next day we head for the famous Wooden Spoon restaurant and run into the CT pack.

L to R: Berg, Courage, JButler, Ben, Guinness, Chicken Rob and Seekthegrail.

    IMG_20140321_130519.jpg

As a mixed game player, simply had to have the Omaha Eggs Benedict. Steak and mushroom FTW!

    IMG_20140321_131510.jpg

So we start the day around 2:30 and get right back into the .25/.50 $125 max 345 mixed game.

Here grail gets it in with nut flush draw and top pair in a huge 4 way pot, against a couple open enders and who knows what else. He scoops when he rivers a third K.

    IMG_20140321_144836.jpg
  • Nothing much is happening for me, but then I get dealt a pat straight in Tahoe and stack Ben to get to around $250 or so. The very next hand I get dealt a pat boat and get Grail to stack off into me with a flopped nut flush.

Grail is the big stack at the table from the earlier hand so I double up to over $500. In the picture below we have the flop pot bets in the pot and I happily call when he jams the turn.

    IMG_20140321_164329.jpg

    Grail chipes are the best!

    IMG_20140321_164643.jpg

A few hours later I get into another massive Tahoe hand when I flop top set and 2nd nut flush draw but crash into a pat straight. I was kind of certain I had run into a pat but had too many ways to win or was just too bad to fold. We agree to run the river twice and I scoop when I bingo a boat both times.

    IMG_20140321_175618.jpg

    Black chipes are worth $20.

    IMG_20140321_175658.jpg

    IMG_20140321_175805.jpg

So I'm up over a grand before 8pm. Ruh roh. I spend the next 5 hours losing my way down to $850 or so. Eventually the big 1/1 game gets started and I get bumped to the kiddie table as the first player on the wait list. About 1 am a seat opens and I buy back in for $550. Then I get stacked by Guinness in Tahoe when I get dealt a pat JJJAx hand and c/r pot to get heads up with him. We get it in on a 887 board, when of course he bingos with 87 in his hand.

Authentic Dunes cash chipes! Heaven. The history literally oozes into your fingers as you shuffle these dream chips.

    IMG_20140321_235101.jpg

So I rebuy for my last $300 in winnings on the day. Fortunately in BigO I get it in on a flop of 964, holding 98875 against jbutler, who has A66xx. Luckily he has no low draw and we agree to run it twice. I scoop a $1k'ish pot when I catch a straight and a low, both times. So 3 $1k swings on the day and I end the day up $900 plus.
  • Great report as always - looking fwd to more.

And you sickos playing these degen games..gambooooool!
  • So another super late night and we go for breakfast/lunch at the Wooden Spoon again. The other degens have left already but while we wait for a table we see Courage and a few others roll past the window with a shopping cart full of beer.

We forgot that there was a warm up SOHE tournament so unfortunately got to the house too late for that but we both jump into the cash games as soon as they start up. I play PLO for about 1/2 hour and manage to partially freeroll the tourney for a $40 win. Then the bbq arrives and it was seriously so good that I was preoccupied with stuffing my face and forgot to take any pictures. Mashed and gravy, baked beans, chilli, cornbread, ribs, brisket, and pulled pork with 4-5 different types of sauce. Heaven!

Then the tourney started which was $120, $20 bounty, with the most amazing authentic Dunes chips which are the complement to the cash set we were playing with in the 1/1 game the previous night. Props to Berg and his incredible chipes.

    IMG_20140322_163256.jpg

I start the tourney completely card dead and get all the way to the first break without picking up a single playable hand. I had some opportunities with some baby PP but there was more than one maniac on the table and it was often 3 bets before I even got to act.

Shortly after the break, I have folded my way down to 7k when I decide to call a raise from the button and see a flop 4 or 5 way. The flop comes 225 and it is checked to me. I make a stealish looking potish size bet with A2 and the maniac who raised preflop jams on me. I snap and double through 44. WTF?

Then I return to card dead and mostly fold my way as we break down to 2 tables and then make final table as a low stack with 8k or so, with Grail at lot more healthy at 15k or so. I do pick up a bounty at 2 tables though when finally, out of card dead frustration, raise UTG with A7s, air ball the flop, which gets checked around 3 way and spike a 7 on the turn. I bet out and a super short stacked Paz goes allin for a couple hundred more and he misses his straight draw on the river.

    It's the final table!

    IMG_20140322_193453.jpg

So anyways at FT a couple guys go out fairly quickly and then Grail goes out when a frustrated player issues the deadly 'fuck it, I call' statement after Grail 3 bet shoves. AK goes down to J9s and Grail hits the rail in 8th.

Not really any super memorable hands but I keep fighting the short stack all the way down to four handed. I do pick up a bounty at some point but I forget who, how or when. 5 handed I pick up AA, shove and get called by jbutler with.........AA. Suxors. Anyways at four handed we pull $100 from 1st, $50 from 2nd and $25 from third to pay 4th place. jbutler goes out in 4th and valiantly offers to deal the rest of final table. From 4 handed on down, no-one can generate any significant advantage and getting to heads up takes more than two hours. So kudos to jbutler. His commentary on the play was pure gold and had us all almost to tears with laughter more than once. 3 handed I 3 bet shove a bet from matill with KK and run into....KK. C'mon twice in one tourney? FFS.

    1395533710192.jpg

Courage finally gets crippled and then goes out and then matill and I battle it out for over 20 min but eventually a string of bad cards/bad luck and big blinds gets me short. I manage to double up once but shove again the next paint I see with Q4, hit the 4 on the flop but K turn matches matill's hand and IGHN in 2nd place for $680 and 3 $20 bounties.

Some high quality trophies. Thanks Berg! I am now 4/4 in cashing these CT meetup tournies, two 2nds, one 1st and a 4th or 5th place.

    IMG_20140322_230344.jpg

The uncapped 1/1 big game was full at this point. Here Grail is getting it in with some crap, I'm sure.

    IMG_20140323_033514.jpg

So I sat in the kiddie game and played a 234 high only mixed game and proceeded to get obnoxiously drunk on all the great Smuttynose beers than ssanel brought. Pure awesomeness. Getting drunk was strangely working for me though, even when I would flat out state that the flop hit me pretty hard, for some reason Courage, jbutler, Ben and krafticus didn't seem to believe. We played on to 5 am and finally decided that a few hours of sleep was necessary before checking out. I finish up another couple hundred.

    Great times!

Kentucky wins on Sunday while I'm on the plane home to cap a freaking great weekend.

Ugh I wish I had a better picture. So happy I got to play with these chips because they are now for sale. :(
    • Retail pricing is $5 for the $5 chips, $10 for the $20 chips, and $12 for the $100 chips. It is impossible to find the $1 chips in anything more than single chip quantities on EBay at ~$18-20 per chip.....there might be 4 of us in the world with a full rack of Dunes Paulson $1s and the other 3 guys aren't selling.

At retail prices, this set is worth more than $7500 (and this is via valuing the $1s at a conservative $20 per chip).

      Pricing below:

      Dunes $1s: $1900 (1 rack available)
      Dunes $5s: $340 (5 racks available)
Dunes $20s: $8 per chip (240 chips available)
Dunes $100s: $9 per chip (60 chips available)

Total set: $5900 (if sold to 1 person)

  • Sweet Jesus that's a lot for chips. It looks like a beautiful set though.
  • The chip market has gone completely insane in the last 6 months. I keep looking at my sets trying to find something to sell but I use all of mine and like each one for a different reason.

Looks like a buyer has been found. Personally I think he underpriced it.

You really use ALL your chips, really?? Don't you have like about tree-fiddy sets?

Personally I think we should ask Mrs Moose her opinion.... Mama needs new shoes....
  • Looks like ya'll are having fun . Moose, try not to take all STG's money......at least leave him enough for gas.
  • This was two years ago.
  • So what's a rack of Gold Fitzies worth these days?
  • I would start at 170. Would probably sell.
  • Not bad . . . that is a hell of a mark up. what is causing the increase? Any idea? Completely out of the "chip game" now . . .
  • Paulson quit the home game market so it kind of removed the floor. Also no recent casino closings of any quality for the chiproom.
  • I knew about Paulson leaving the home market, that happened about the time I bailed on Poker Chip Forum. Interesting that nothing has come up for the Chiproom to retail, though . . .
