WPT Montreal 2013 Roll Call

I've been asked by several people about carpooling or sharing a room at WPT Montreal, so maybe we can use this thread for a roll call, roommate and carpooling options. Forumers may be done as late as December 6 or as early as November 29, so some including myself could be looking for a different ride back to the GTA. A friend & I booked at the Holiday Inn Montreal as they were about to run out of the $99+/night rooms.

a) Blondefish: carpooling from Oakville in friend's car on Wednesday morning, November 27, and staying at Holiday Inn Midtown, until at least December 1. May need to hitchhike back!

b) The_Game: driving on Thursday from Mississauga to play the satellite(s).

c) SteveKerr: playing Day 1B from Orangeville.

d) DrCarl: VIA train from Niagara Falls.

  • Wish I could attend this one...
  • Just to let people know as another option I did it last year and will be doing it again, i grap a via rail ticket for 49$ The holiday inn is just a little walk and train ride takes about 5 1/2 hrs its not a bad trip wifi and a snack.
  • Note that there will be NO Lakeshore West line GO Trains or buses operating on November 30 and December 1. :( I may stay until at least Monday, December 2.

  • I will be driving, currently by myself.

Playing Day 1b on Saturday November 30th.

I am either leaving Thursday November 28th around 12:30/1:00pm and plan on playing the 10 Seat Guaranteed Satellite that starts at 8:00pm.

If that does not happen then I will be leaving Friday November 29th in the morning.

Leaving from Orangeville, 10 south to 410 south to 401 east.

I am staying at The Holiday Inn Midtown same as BlondeFish, my room is currently booked to check out on Tuesday December 3rd, will extend if needed.

Once I am out of The Main Event, I will be driving home either that day or early morning the next day.

    fyp.
  • I am taking train up fri morning and booked in at holiday inn. If someone going from falls and wants some company let me know i will pay for gas and supper as long as i can cancel my train ticket. Also it would be nice to meet some of you guys in person.
  • It looks like all who replied are staying in the same Holiday Inn Midtown. Since pokerJAH the Party Planner does not seem to be going, is there any interest in going to any of the following when not playing a tournament?

    1) New planetarium (or Biodome/Insectarium)?

    2) Restaurants such as Schwartz Deli, Vinnie Gambini, or Ristorante RIDI?

    3) Play cash games at Montreal Casino or somewhere else with the lowest rake?

    4) Gentlemen's clubs such as Kingdom, Cleopatra Cafe, Bar Downtown, or something better?

    5) Anything else good to do in Montreal besides Vortex Racing?
  • Leafs vs. Habs Saturday.

Too cold this time of year in Montreal for my Jamaican blood :) I rather just stick to the low $5/max rake at 2/5 or 5/5 at Woodbine. Or my favourite Chinese 2/5 300BB max game with the many Asian cannons.

Personally I find the Indian Reserve poker rooms around Montreal pretty depressing, although I think Playground is the exception.

btw, did you make it yet? If you can get me a comp. ball cap from Playground, would appreciate it!
  • No snow on the roads to Montreal made it to Holiday Inn after 7 hours and several pit stops. Now heading for dinner then Event #8...

Have you ever been to Stardust, Playground, or VIP?

These places are nicer than any poker room anywhere in Ontario,

    difficult?

When I went to McGill I used to do the drive in <3.5h...how's the horse and buggy holding up?

Don't think they were around when I was there last. All I recall is this place is in the middle of no where and once you leave the poker room, there is nothing around but smoke shop after smoke shop. Its ok if you want to import some cheap smokes across the Quebec/Ontario border. Don't really like the ambiance of the reserve. Rather save my poker trips for Florida, California, Bahamas, Vegas, etc.

    You choose:

Your opinion means nothing if you've never been......much like my opinion means nothing for Bahamas (been there, but not for poker) or Cally (ditto).

Montreal would rank #2 on my poker destinations list, Vegas the only one better for obvious reasons.

No-one stays on the reserve, it's much the same as driving through a small town. The poker rooms are top-notch...Playground ranking as the 2nd best poker room I've been too (Venetian on top imo).

And if you're staying downtown YUL....welllll, if you can't have fun there....u should just stay home.

I asked about your complimentary Playground ball cap, but they said you have to buy one. Do you want a white "PokerPro" or WPT/PartyPoker cap instead?

My friend needed to do a lot of pit stops, e.g., got off at Keele during RUSH HOUR & couldn't find a way back to the 401 until Yorkdale.

    PokerPro would be excellent, thanks!
  • Mohawk gave me the white PokerPro cap & keychain, and I was planning to give them away, but when my kid saw them she claimed she wanted them yet again to go along with the rest of the poker swag I bring home but never use. I'll have to negotiate with her on giving up the cap - maybe for a Rainbow Loom.

Many of the decent players I've played in GTA casinos are now in Montreal. Here a couple more people to add to the WPT Montreal Roll Call:

    1) Xuan Liu (xx23)

    2) Royal Flush Girl & pokerJAH mistress Ivy Teves >:D

  • I take back anything bad I have ever said about Playground. I am on my way, just passed through Ajax. Can you put me on the 5/5 list at midnight.
  • That's the spirit!

BTW as of today over 100 live satellite seats have been awarded with another 25+ tonight and sit-n-gos running all the time (6 in the past two days) there's sure to be some added value in the tournament.

Plus the poker stars are coming out in force - there's a Thanksgiving feast on right now for a bunch of poker orphans from all over the US, and the tweets are coming fast and furious as people descend on Montreal for the event.

Should be a ton of fun!
  • Let's see a milly up top! (Fingers crossed). Any idea how many from online sats? They ran a big window and seemed to get good numbers every Sunday, safe to say another 50-100 there?

Ooops, did I just become a shill for Playground Poker? ;)
Can you put me on the 5/5 list at midnight.
I don't think I can put you on the Playground list. I signed up for the cash games, $385+$35 & $220+$20 SNGs this morning, but missed them calling my name as I was distracted talking with your mistress Ivy Teves, along with RFG Angelique Velez, Catherine and Jen in the VIP Player Lounge. >:D PM me your cell phone & which hotel you're staying.

    Baller lifestyle!

Does "Snakes" still have max $5 rake?
  • I phoned Snakes long distance before and asked if they are doing their $10/hour rakeback promotion during WPT Montreal, but the answer was no?! :arghh: So to paraphrase Las Vegas,
"Who plays in Playground, STAYS in Playground!"

  • Good luck! Maybe next year for me!
  • To jontm or mikelbyl, any idea of the exact time the table draws, prize structure, etc. will be posted online?

Just like at the last WPT NAPC, I'm going to try to help coach my friends. One of my inexperienced friends had ~100,000 chips very early on and was probably the chip leader and increased it to ~180,000 just prior to the dinner buffet/break. Every time he won a big pot, he was literally shaking and wanted to sit out the rest of the day, so I took off my "Dan Harrington" hat and put on my "Jared Tendler" hat. Some of the qualifiers don't bother bringing a guest so they were talking about me being their guest if they win a package again, but my roommate said he wants me all to himself. ;)
  • I think less than 10 of all the PartyPoker qualifiers made it to Day 2. It seems that there are a lot less players than previous WPT ME, but a much higher proportion of pros.
  • As for the draws, they seem to be out on the Playground events blog by 8 am their local time when I get up. Been retweeting them. Overall the prize-pool was only about $600k smaller...862 @ $3500 x.97 as opposed to 1173 @ $3000 x .97 last year, but still higher than Spring Classic. The field has gotten super tough though, there was ALOT of regs/big names in this one, I would say every bit as tough as most WSOP Vegas events and by far one the most prestigious in terms of talent you have to get through that Canada has ever seen. IMO of course, "this ain't your daddy's home game" ;p
  • The field in the WPT event itself was - is - incredibly tough. You could easily make the argument that of the top 100 NL MTT players in the world 50 of them were in this field.

Just picking a single random table from before the bubble burst tonight, Gavin Smith (still good despite his antics), Victor Ramdin, David Barter and Guillaume Darcourt. Or How about Yann Dion (yadio online, won a big live tourney in Europe AND an online major in a single week last year), Eugene Katchalov, and Kevin Macphee together? Stephen O'Dwyer and Shawn Buchanan sat together with Amir Babakhani for a long time today as well - and oh yeah, Jonathan Little was also on the table. Sick sick sick.

As far as draws go, I usually get them about 45 mins to an hour after the day ends and put them up asap. For Day 2 of a multi-day-1 event it takes longer - I only got the results at 2:30am and was asleep at the time so I put them up at like 5am. I'm only up now because I expect tomorrow's draw in minutes.

As far as the number goes - I'm very happy with it. Last year was a novelty, and kind of blew up between Day 1a and 1b in ways that can't be reproduced. But 862 runners will be among the top-3 WPT tournaments of the year, most likely, and in Montreal, where realistically there was NO international-level poker until one year ago.

We're obviously also super happy about the amazing unsolicited tweets people write about it being the best poker room ever and stuff. No disrespect to our friends at other casinos, but no one goes to River Rock and writes "best run tournament I've ever played" and such.

    I *am* biased though...

Anyhow - gotta go put up the draw for Day 3.
  • From a grassroots reporter perspective have a few favorites left to watch; Winnipeg's Zenni Petros, Regina's Derrick Houle, Griffin "flush entity" Benger, Yann "yadio" Dion, Mark Radoja, Nova Scotia's Norm Overdjck and of course G Smith (think he is still in)

Few other Montrealers in the mix always posting results, including Spring Championship champ I think, repeats always a great headline...
